A Morning at Paloquemao Market, Bogotá / Una mañana en el Mercado de Paloquemao, Bogotá

There's something I always try to do when I travel to a new place: visit its popular markets. Here in Latin America, they are usually quite colorful and bustling, and Paloquemado Market in Bogotá was no exception.

Since it was Sunday, it seemed like an ideal day to go, and as luck would have it, I had a few free hours in the morning, so I didn't hesitate to take a moto-taxi, a very affordable mode of transportation in the city, which dropped me off near the market.

Upon arrival, I could notice that the market has a large section dedicated to plants and flowers of all kinds in its outdoor area. Unfortunately, I couldn't explore that area thoroughly because it started raining, forcing me to quickly venture into the labyrinthine aisles of the covered market.

The atmosphere reminded me a lot of the popular markets in Venezuela: winding aisles filled with stalls offering a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, medicinal and aromatic herbs, and a wide range of local products.

There were also numerous food stalls and natural juice stands. I had just had breakfast at the hotel, so I wasn't hungry at that moment, something I regretted later because these places are ideal for tasting authentic local food at affordable prices.

Nevertheless, I couldn't resist buying a sweet freshly squeezed orange juice from one of the stands.

I also took the opportunity to purchase palo santo, an aromatic bark from a tree that is burned as incense. I really like its scent, and in Caracas, it is uncommon and sold at a much higher price compared to the quantity and low cost that I found here.

Although it was a relatively quick outing, I was able to get the products I was looking for, and most importantly, I had the opportunity to get a closer glimpse of everyday life in Bogotá.

Una mañana en el Mercado de Paloquemao, Bogotá

Hay algo que siempre trato de hacer cuando viajo a un lugar nuevo: visitar sus mercados populares. Aquí en Latinoamérica, por lo general, son bastante coloridos y bulliciosos, y el mercado de Paloquemado en Bogotá no fue la excepción.

Al ser domingo, me pareció un día ideal para ir, y como casualmente tenía unas horas libres en la mañana, no dudé en tomar un moto-taxi, un transporte muy económico en la ciudad, que me dejó cerca del mercado.

Nada más llegar, pude notar que el mercado tiene un gran sector dedicado a plantas y flores de todo tipo en su área exterior. Lamentablemente no pude recorrer esa zona a fondo porque comenzó a llover, obligándome a internarme rápidamente en los laberínticos pasillos del mercado cubierto.

El ambiente me recordó mucho a los mercados populares de Venezuela: pasillos serpenteantes repletos de puestos con una gran variedad de frutas y vegetales frescos, hierbas medicinales y aromáticas y una amplia gama de productos locales.

También había numerosos puestos de comida y jugos naturales. Yo acababa de desayunar en el hotel, así que no tenía nada de hambre en ese momento, algo de lo que me arrepentí después, pues estos sitios son ideales para degustar la auténtica comida local a precios asequibles.

De todos modos, no pude resistirme a comprar un dulce jugo de naranja recién exprimido en uno de los puestos.

También aproveché para adquirir palo santo, una corteza aromática de un árbol que se quema como incienso. A mí me gusta mucho su aroma y en Caracas es poco común y se vende a un precio muy elevado en comparación con la cantidad y el bajo costo que encontré aquí.

Aunque fue un paseo relativamente rápido, pude conseguir los productos que buscaba y lo más importante, tuve la oportunidad de tener una imagen más cercana de la vida cotidiana de Bogotá.
