I’ve been playing around with drones for a few years now, mostly taking them on vacations and to local beauty spots. Along the way I’ve picked up a few tricks in the editing rooms and learned the basic principles of photography. The videos I’ve produced so far have been quite adequate and on the odd occasion I’ve managed to surprise myself. I’ve never been artistically minded so I often have to grind out a plan in order to get the results I want to achieve. What I’ve discovered is that I need to be by myself, have plenty of undisturbed time, and try to remember the basic principles of photography. If I get those three things, I normally come out with some good footage.

Granted, I’m still swimming in the little end but at least I can say that I’ve left behind my armbands.

I’ve always wondered if I could ever earn some money on the side. Maybe not wedding photography or anything like that. That kind of stuff seems a little too spontaneous for the level I’m at. But maybe offering a service for surveying or promotional stuff. Something like this I imagine I could take my time with and be allowed to go at my own speed. I assume that once you get going the potential earnings could be quite attractive and from what I understand the license I need I relatively cheap and easily achievable. Until I cross that threshold and attain a full drone license I’m simply not allowed to earn from any of my footage (Hive not included 😉). However, I was recently approached by my current employer who asked me to create a video of our site. Now, I didn’t ask what he intends to do with my video and he simply forgot to inform me of his intentions 🤷‍♂️ So, if by any chance my video ends up on the company website I can honestly say that I was non-the-wiser. And if the boss decides to reach in his deep pockets and buy me a nice bottle of spiced rum or a few cans of expensive craft ale, I’m sure he’s only doing this as a random gesture of kindness and not at all payment for services rendered…

Legalities and grey ground aside, I spent a couple of days flying my drone around our site and even managed to grab a guy from the office to help give the video a bit of animation. All-in-all, I think I tuned out a pretty decent video. Nothing spectacular, just a nice solid piece of work. And who knows, maybe one of our customers or one of our associates likes the video enough to ask who produced it…who knows what will happen then 🙂

Anyhoo, here’s my latest video for anyone who’s interested in this kind of thing. Any advice or helpful information is always welcome, so please feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Hope to see you again in the next one. See ya!

It looks great Dan, well done. I've never used a drone, so can't offer any advice. I do love the fishbowl effect at the end. @samstonehill is the once you ask about that, he's done some awesome footage and time-lapse videos. Love to you my friend xxxxx

Hi Aishlinn, thank you. "Fishbowl", I like that term. It's a simple feature to create and some might think it's old-hat but I still love it 🙂 I do love a time lapse video and I made a failed attempt at one a while back. I'll have to check out @samstonehill's work. Thanks for the tip off 👍 xxx

Thank you @ksteem 🙂 as it turned out there wasn't a lot of editing needed other than selecting the clips I wanted to use. Due to having two sessions to record some footage I was able to take more time picking certain shots I wanted. Think I'll try take this approach more often.
