Hola, espero que estes bien, que estes sano y con tu familia, hoy decidí escribir sobre este viaje que hice hace unos meses para participar en la inauguración de una exposición de arte donde participe y donde aproveche de hacer un viaje fugaz por la ciudad de Maracaibo.

In May, I received some great news as an artist: I had been selected to participate in the Third National Artist’s Book Fair—Reverón Edition—organized by the Maracaibo Center for Fine Arts. It’s not that I’m always exhibiting my work, but this particular event filled me with excitement because I had been working for two years on the piece I was going to submit.
So as soon as I heard about it, I started making plans to attend the opening day. Between looking for a place to stay, deciding to travel alone, and reviewing all the safety protocols, the day finally arrived.

About halfway there, the bus made a stop where all the passengers got off, and that’s when I realized something: I wasn’t the only woman traveling alone; there were four others who were in the same situation, although each for different reasons. That put my mind at ease and helped me take some of the weight off the word “alone.”

I arrived at the Maracaibo bus terminal around 3 p.m. Google Maps was the best tool for navigating those streets, and I also asked people I ran into along the way for directions. What I did was ask a motorcycle taxi to take me to the Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquira.
Llegar al hotel fue bastante sencillo y lo bueno es que solo estaba a unas tres cuadras del lugar donde seria la exposición. Apenas una hora después de mi llegada al hotel estaba saliendo al Centro de Bellas Artes y coincidí en la salida con otra artista que también se quedaba en el hotel.
Getting to the hotel was pretty easy, and the best part was that it was only about three blocks from where the exhibition was going to be held. Barely an hour after I arrived at the hotel, I was heading out to the Centro de Bellas Artes, and I ran into another artist at the exit who was also staying at the hotel.
Gracias a esa coincidencia saliendo del hotel, hice una amiga que me acompaño durante todo el viaje. Ella es una artista que también participaba en la exposición y con la que pude compartir y conocer otras personas.
Thanks to that chance encounter as I was leaving the hotel, I made a friend who accompanied me throughout the trip. She is an artist who was also participating in the exhibition, and through her I was able to connect with and meet other people.

Esta amiga que te digo tenía un tour bien definido para el siguiente día antes de regresarse a su ciudad, en mi caso, solo tenía en mente irme bien temprano al terminal para regresar a Barquisimeto, aunque, como dicen por ahí "no aguante dos pedidas" y me fui a hacer el tour por la ciudad con ella que si conocía un poco más la zona. Comenzamos por una parada a desayunar yoyo, un plátano empanizado relleno con full queso y en este caso lo pedí con pollo además de sus salsitas, una delicia la verdad.
This friend of mine had a well-planned tour lined up for the next day before heading back to her city. As for me, I’d only planned to leave very early for the bus station to head back to Barquisimeto—though, as they say, “I couldn’t resist two invitations,” so I ended up going on the city tour with her since she knew the area a little better. We started with a stop for breakfast—a “yoyo,” a breaded plantain stuffed with lots of cheese. In this case, I ordered it with chicken and their little sauces on the side; it was truly delicious.

Next, we went to the Wayuu craft market, and I have to tell you, I absolutely loved this place—plus, I got to see firsthand how they were making a woven piece. I love this kind of craftwork especially because at one point in my life I took a course on this type of weaving, and I know how much work goes into making each piece.

The third stop on this route was the Baralt Theater, where we went to see an exhibition on the legacy of the artist Francisco Bellorin. So we walked from the market to the theater, passing through Bolívar Square.
Lo que más me impresiono de este teatro fue su arquitectura. Entramos principalmente para ver la exposición porque el teatro estaba cerrado, sin embargo, echando cuento con la gente nos dieron la oportunidad de verlo por dentro y no solo eso, subimos a través de una escalera que se encuentra en la tiendita de arte a uno de los palcos donde incluso encendieron las luces para apreciar la belleza del lugar en su totalidad.
What impressed me most about this theater was its architecture. We went in mainly to see the exhibition because the theater was closed; however, after chatting with the staff, they gave us the opportunity to see the inside—and not only that, we climbed a staircase located in the little art shop to one of the boxes, where they even turned on the lights so we could fully appreciate the beauty of the place.

Después de esto nos despedimos para cada una irse al terminal. Desde allá de Maracaibo salí casi a las 6 de la tarde en un carrito por puesto donde me tocaron unas compañeras que me entretuvieron todo el camino con sus historias. Esta fue la foto de despedida de este viaje, donde logre captar de mejor forma al puente Rafael Urdaneta. La verdad estoy muy feliz con este viaje y con todas las personas que conecte en el, fue un tour express pero siento que pude conocer bastante de esta ciudad.
After that, we said our goodbyes so we could each head to the bus terminal. From there, in Maracaibo, I left around 6 p.m. on a shared minibus, where I ended up sitting with some fellow passengers who kept me entertained the whole way with their stories. This was the farewell photo from this trip, where I managed to get the best shot of the Rafael Urdaneta Bridge.
