Żywiec Lake — The Last Dance

1 · Mgła tańczyła nad wodą.
The mist danced over the water.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Mgła tańczyła nad wodą i górami leniwie, jakby absolutnie nigdzie się nie spieszyła, a całość skąpana była w tym ciepłym, pomarańczowym świetle, którego po prostu nie da się nie uwielbiać. Przez cały poranek mgła pozostawała przy tym wyjątkowo subtelna. Nie wylewała się wielkimi, malowniczymi masami, na co po cichu liczyłem, ale w sumie kim jestem, żeby dyskutować z naturą o tym, jak ma wyglądać jej własny występ. Gdzieś w oddali na powierzchni jeziora unosił się jakiś pływak czy też znacznik. Do dziś nie mam pewności, czym dokładnie był, ale jako element wykreowany przez człowieka i wrzucony w sam środek krajobrazu pasował mi jak znalazł.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · The mist danced over the water and the mountains lazily, as if it were in absolutely no hurry to be anywhere, and the whole scene was bathed in that warm, orange light you simply can't help but adore. The mist stayed remarkably subtle all morning. It didn't pour out in great, picturesque masses, which I'd quietly been hoping for, but then again, who am I to argue with nature about how its own performance ought to look. Somewhere in the distance a float, or perhaps a marker, drifted on the surface of the lake. To this day I'm not sure exactly what it was, but as a man-made element dropped right into the middle of the landscape, it suited me perfectly.

2 · Promienie słońca na chmurach i we mgle.
Sun rays on the clouds and in the mist.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Mgły unoszące się nieco wyżej dostały swoją porcję słonecznego światła, podobnie zresztą jak część chmur. Sam Beskid Mały w tle, a przynajmniej ten skrawek widoczny znad jeziora, nie miał jeszcze tyle szczęścia. Słońce oświetlało go z przeciwnej strony, będąc zwyczajnie zbyt nisko dla części przeciwnej. Czy to źle? Niekoniecznie. Dzięki temu ciemne góry mogły ładnie kontrastować z rozświetloną parą wodną unoszącą się w przestrzeni w przeróżnych formach. Oczywiście, jak każdy fotograf z aparatem w garści, nie potrafiłem przepuścić takiej okazji. Promienie słońca i tego typu kontrasty to słabość, do której przyznaję się bez wstydu.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · The mist drifting a little higher got its share of sunlight, and so did some of the clouds. The Beskid Mały itself in the background, or at least the sliver of it visible from the lake, wasn't quite so lucky yet. The sun was lighting it from the opposite side, simply sitting too low for the side facing me. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. Thanks to it, the dark mountains could contrast nicely with the illuminated water vapour drifting through the air in all sorts of forms. Naturally, like any photographer with a camera in hand, I couldn't let such a chance slip by. Sun rays and contrasts of this kind are a weakness I admit to without the slightest shame.

3 · Przystań i lasy we mgle.
The marina and the forests in the mist.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Po drugiej stronie zatoki drzemała przystań pełna żaglówek. Las za nią ginął we mgle, a maszty ustawiły się w równym rzędzie niczym grzebień wbity w brzeg. O tej porze nikt jeszcze nie wypływał, łodzie stały nieruchomo i tylko delikatna para unosząca się nad wodą przejawiała jakiekolwiek oznaki ruchu. Istne odwzorowanie całego tego poranka, utkanego z ciszy i spokoju. No, może z wyjątkiem pewnego wariata z aparatem, który spokoju zaznać nie potrafił, bo nie miał bladego pojęcia, w którą stronę skierować obiektyw. Działo się bowiem dokoła stanowczo zbyt wiele jak na kogoś, kto przyszedł tu rzekomo odpocząć.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · On the far side of the bay dozed a marina full of sailboats. The forest behind it vanished into the mist, and the masts lined up in a neat row like a comb stuck into the shore. At that hour no one had set out yet, the boats stood motionless, and only the faint vapour drifting over the water showed any sign of movement at all. A faithful reflection of the whole morning, woven from silence and calm. Well, perhaps with the exception of a certain lunatic with a camera, who couldn't find any calm himself, because he had not the faintest idea which way to point his lens. There was simply far too much going on for someone who'd supposedly come here to rest.

4 · Śpiące żaglówki, jeszcze raz.
The sleeping sailboats, once more.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Do tej samej przystani wróciłem jeszcze raz, bo najwyraźniej jedno zdjęcie mi nie wystarczyło. Tym razem złapałem ją z nieco szerszego kadru, z kępą traw w rogu i odbiciami masztów rozmywającymi się w spokojnej tafli. Powtarzanie tego samego motywu z lekko innej perspektywy to nawyk, którego chyba nigdy się nie pozbędę, choć szczerze mówiąc, jakoś specjalnie się o to nie staram. Tym razem doszła jeszcze jedna zmienna, mianowicie pora. Słońce zdążyło wspiąć się znacznie wyżej, a światło, zarówno jego kolor, jak i natężenie, zdążyło już lekko zmienić całą scenę.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · I came back to the same marina once more, because apparently one photo wasn't enough for me. This time I caught it from a slightly wider frame, with a clump of grass in the corner and the reflections of the masts dissolving in the calm surface. Repeating the same subject from a slightly different angle is a habit I'll probably never shake, though to be honest I don't try particularly hard to. This time there was one more variable in play, namely the hour. The sun had managed to climb considerably higher, and the light, both its colour and its intensity, had already slightly altered the whole scene.

5 · Ścieżka wzdłuż linii brzegu.
The path along the shoreline.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · To właśnie ta ścieżka, o której wspominałem na czarno-białej kartce. Ta, którą przyszedłem z parkingu i którą miałem już dawno wracać, święcie przekonany, że to definitywny koniec pleneru. Łąka po obu stronach świeciła od porannego światła, koniczyna nieśmiało wystawiała różowe główki, a jezioro mrugało zza traw po prawej. Trudno wracać do domu, kiedy droga powrotna wygląda co najmniej tak interesująco jak cały plener, a momentami wręcz ciekawiej. Ścieżka jest zarówno piesza, jak i rowerowa, choć o tej porze panował na niej jeszcze błogi spokój. Od czasu do czasu przewinął się jakiś wędkarz, który albo wracał z nocnych łowów, albo dopiero wybierał się na poranne. Każdy z nich obrzucał mnie tym charakterystycznym spojrzeniem, jakby zastanawiał się, co za człowiek o tej godzinie celuje aparatem w trawę.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · This is the very path I mentioned on the black and white page. The one I'd walked in from the car park and was supposed to have taken back long ago, firmly convinced this was the definitive end of the shoot. The meadow on both sides glowed with the morning light, the clover shyly raised its pink heads, and the lake winked from behind the grass on the right. It's hard to head home when the way back looks at least as interesting as the whole shoot, and at times downright more so. The path is both for walkers and cyclists, though at that hour a blissful calm still reigned over it. Every now and then an angler passed by, either returning from a night's fishing or only just setting out for the morning one. Each of them shot me that characteristic look, as if wondering what kind of person points a camera at the grass at this hour.

6 · Szerokie ujęcie jeziora i okolicy.
A wide shot of the lake and its surroundings.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Tu jezioro pokazało się w pełnej krasie, szerokie i spokojne, z górami rysującymi się delikatnie na horyzoncie. To właśnie Beskid Żywiecki piętrzy się tam w tle. Mała zielona łódka, którą być może kojarzycie już z poprzedniej kartki, choć tam występowała w wersji pozbawionej koloru, dryfowała sobie leniwie przy brzegu. Lubię takie ujęcia, gdzie wszystko jest na swoim miejscu, a oko ma gdzie odpocząć. Sporo tu wolnej, czystej przestrzeni rozciągniętej nad całym jeziorem, i właśnie ta przestrzeń robi tutaj większą robotę niż niejeden zatłoczony kadr. Jezioro Żywieckie jest bowiem rozległym zbiornikiem, gdzie niejednokrotnie od jednego brzegu do drugiego dzieli obserwatora spory dystans.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · Here the lake revealed itself in full glory, wide and calm, with mountains faintly sketched on the horizon. That's the Beskid Żywiecki rising there in the background. A small green boat, which you might already recognise from the previous page, though there it appeared in a version stripped of colour, drifted lazily near the shore. I like shots like this, where everything sits in its place and the eye has somewhere to rest. There's plenty of open, clean space stretched out over the whole lake, and it's precisely that space that does more work here than many a crowded frame. Żywiec Lake is, after all, a vast reservoir, where the distance from one shore to the other is often considerable.

7 · Biały kwiat w porannym świetle.

▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Nie ma dla mnie poranka bez przyklęknięcia gdzieś w trawie nad pojedynczym kwiatkiem. Choć przyznaję, że nie zawsze te zdjęcia później komukolwiek pokazuję. Tym razem padło na margaretkę, a przynajmniej tak mi się wydaje, bo z całą pewnością nie jestem botanikiem. Stała w świetle tak dumnie, jakby pozowała specjalnie dla mnie. Rozmyte tło rozsypało się na kolorowe kółka, a ja po raz kolejny zapomniałem, że miałem już dawno być w drodze do domu.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · There's no morning for me without kneeling down somewhere in the grass over a single little flower. Though I'll admit I don't always show these photos to anyone afterwards. This time it fell to an oxeye daisy, or at least that's what I think, because I'm certainly no botanist. It stood in the light so proudly, as if posing just for me. The blurred background scattered into colourful little circles, and once again I forgot I was supposed to be on my way home long ago.

8 · Świat z perspektywy traw.
The world from the grass.
▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Położyłem się niemal przy samej ziemi, żeby spojrzeć na świat z perspektywy traw. Źdźbła kołysały się leniwie na tle błękitnego nieba, a jezioro i góry rozmyły się gdzieś w tle, oddając całą scenę drobnym kłosom na pierwszym planie. Proste, ciche zdjęcie, z tych, które robię głównie dla siebie, żeby przetestować coś nowego. Efekt końcowy wydał mi się jednak na tyle ciekawy, że wyszło z tego całkiem zgrabne zdjęcie-tło. Takie, które z pełnym przekonaniem wykorzystam w którymś z tych licznych projektów fotograficzno-graficznych, co to od dłuższego czasu majestatycznie kłębią się w mojej głowie i z równie majestatyczną konsekwencją nie doczekały się jeszcze realizacji. Ale spokojnie, kiedyś na pewno. Przynajmniej tak sobie wmawiam za każdym razem, gdy zapisuję kolejne takie ujęcie do folderu o wdzięcznej nazwie "projekty".
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · I lay down almost flat against the ground to see the world from the perspective of the grass. The blades swayed lazily against the blue sky, while the lake and the mountains blurred somewhere into the background, handing the whole scene over to the slender stalks up front. A simple, quiet photo, the kind I take mostly for myself, to test something new. The end result struck me as interesting enough, though, that it turned into quite a tidy background shot. The sort I'll most certainly use in one of those numerous photographic and graphic projects that have been majestically swirling around in my head for a good while now, and with equally majestic consistency have yet to see the light of day. But don't worry, someday for sure. At least that's what I tell myself every time I save another such frame to a folder by the charming name of "projects".

9 · Zbliżenie na pobliskie miejscowości.

▸ O FOTOGRAFII · Na sam koniec sięgnąłem teleobiektywem po Pietrzykowice, wieś rozłożoną na wzniesieniu u stóp Beskidów. Górujący nad okolicą kościół Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa widać podobno z każdej strony Kotliny Żywieckiej, więc trudno się dziwić, że i z brzegu jeziora prezentował się okazale. Czerwone dachy wtopione w zieleń, a nad nimi wieża ze złotą kopułą, która o poranku wyglądała wyjątkowo dostojnie. To była ostatnia klatka tego dnia. Mgła już dawno odtańczyła swoje, słońce stało wysoko, a ja w końcu, choć niechętnie, ruszyłem w stronę samochodu, gdzie zostawiłem sprzęt. Jeszcze tylko na moment wróciłem nad jezioro, tym razem już bez aparatu, żeby na spokojnie zbadać teren nieco dokładniej. Czasem dobrze jest popatrzeć na to wszystko zwyczajnie, bez obiektywu.
▸ ABOUT PHOTO · Right at the end I reached with the telephoto for Pietrzykowice, a little town spread across a rise at the foot of the Beskids. The Sacred Heart church that towers over the area is said to be visible from every side of the Żywiec Basin, so it's no wonder it looked impressive even from the lakeshore. Red roofs blended into the greenery, and above them a tower with a golden dome, looking especially dignified in the morning light. That was the last frame of the day. The mist had long since danced its part, the sun stood high, and at last, however reluctantly, I set off towards the car, where I'd left my gear. I only came back to the lake for a moment, this time without the camera, to calmly survey the area a little more closely. Sometimes it's good to look at it all plainly, with no lens between me and the world.
