Dicha Fortaleza fue escenario de combates navales contra embarcaciones piratas, en varias ocasiones rechazó el ataque enemigo y evitó la entrada de tripulaciones indeseadas.

Debido a sus naves abovedadas y el foso que la rodea, posee características arquitectónicas procedentes de la edad media Europea, pero la convierten en una fortificación típica de América, su planta geométrica y su adaptación a la configuración del terreno. Impidiendo la comunicación con el interior de la Fortaleza se encuentra la explanada escalonada de la entrada que lleva al puente levadizo que descansa sobre pilares. La espadaña con su campana también se encuentran en buen estado de conservación.
