Between the bud and the flower

There's a very particular moment in nature, more specifically in trees, that almost goes unnoticed, and that moment isn't flowering or the falling of leaves. It's that instant before everything happens, at the tip of a branch, where small buds begin to form, still closed and discreet.

Hay un momento muy particular en la naturaleza, más concretamente en los árboles, que casi pasa desapercibido, y ese momento no es la floración ni la caída de las hojas. Es ese instante previo a que todo suceda, en la punta de una rama, donde empiezan a formarse pequeños brotes, aún cerrados y discretos.

It was this detail that caught my attention: a thin branch, suspended in the air, with buds aligned at the tip. At first glance they seem motionless, but looking a little more closely you realize there's an expectation before the flowers open.
The buds have that delicate and soft texture that reveals small variations in color with the tones still contained. That's what makes this moment so interesting, the gap between what is and what is about to be.

Fue este detalle el que me llamó la atención: una rama delgada, suspendida en el aire, con brotes alineados en la punta. A primera vista parecen inmóviles, pero al observarlos con más atención, se percibe una expectación antes de que las flores se abran.
Los brotes tienen esa textura delicada y suave que revela pequeñas variaciones de color con los tonos aún contenidos. Eso es lo que hace que este momento sea tan interesante: la brecha entre lo que es y lo que está a punto de ser.

By photographing the same branch from slightly different angles, you notice how the perspective changes small details. A bud stands out more here, the curve of the branch seems more evident there. The gesture is simple, almost like taking two steps around something small to observe it better.

Al fotografiar la misma rama desde ángulos ligeramente diferentes, se observa cómo la perspectiva cambia en pequeños detalles. Un brote destaca más aquí, la curva de la rama parece más evidente allá. El gesto es simple, casi como dar dos pasos alrededor de algo pequeño para observarlo mejor.

Then there are the black and white versions. Curiously, by removing the color, the attention shifts. Suddenly, it's not the tones that draw the eye, but the shapes, the line of the branch, the delicacy of the still-closed buds. The scene becomes more focused. It's the same image, but it seems like a different kind of observation.

Luego están las versiones en blanco y negro. Curiosamente, al eliminar el color, la atención se desplaza. De repente, no son los tonos los que atraen la mirada, sino las formas, la línea de la rama, la delicadeza de los capullos aún cerrados. La escena se enfoca con mayor nitidez. Es la misma imagen, pero parece una observación diferente.

Perhaps that's what these photographs try to capture: the instant of pause. A small moment in the natural cycle of things, when everything is about to change, but remains suspended for a brief instant. A branch, a few buds, and the tranquil feeling that, very soon, something will bloom.

Quizás eso es lo que estas fotografías intentan capturar: el instante de pausa. Un pequeño momento en el ciclo natural de las cosas, cuando todo está a punto de cambiar, pero permanece suspendido por un breve instante. Una rama, algunos capullos y la tranquila sensación de que, muy pronto, algo florecerá.
