Rhodes, the city and its famous colossus

Hello everyone Hivers and welcome back to my blog. As I had already mentioned in a previous post, I visited the island and city of Rhodes, ten days spent among marine beauty, acropolis and nature.

Today I will tell you something about the city of Rhodes, and especially about its famous colossal bronze statue that was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Colossus of Rhodes

Rhodes is the fourth largest island in Greece and is very close to the coast of Turkey. It has a large, well-equipped port and its origins go back more than 600 years before Christ. But let us come to the famous statue. The colossus was erected in the 3rd century BC to celebrate a victory against Demetrius the son of Alexander the Great, who had besieged the city of Rhodes with an army of 40,000 men. The dozens of catapults on ships, aimed at the strong city walls, were to no avail. After many months, a storm destroyed many ships, so Demetrius decided to build a large siege tower to throw stones in a better way, but this too was to no avail. After a year of siege, General Polyphemus organised a fleet from Rhodes and drove the enemies away. To celebrate the victory, the people of Rhodes decided to build an enormous bronze statue, 32 metres high and held up by a structure of iron girders inside. The statue was dedicated to the god Helios, son of the Sun, and took 12 years to make.

Unfortunately, the statue stood for 67 years, when in 223 BC a devastating earthquake caused it to collapse. We know from reliable sources that it was the largest statue ever made by man and entered by right into the Seven Wonders of the Classical World.

Now in its place at the entrance to the harbour are two large columns with two deer on top of them, the deer being a very common animal on the island of Rhodes.

The town is still enclosed by powerful walls, strengthened in medieval times and enriched with a castle, monuments, churches and noble palaces, also because for more than two centuries it was dominated by the Republic of Genoa. Then came the Knights Hospitallers, of Rhodes and Malta, who took possession of the island.

The old town is very touristy, with dozens of places to drink and eat typical Greek cuisine, but we can also find notable shops of local craftsmen and artists.

Rodi, la città e il suo famoso colosso

Ciao a tutti cari amici Hivers e bentornati sul mio blog. Come già vi avevo accennato in un post precedente, ho visitato l'isola e la città di Rodi, dieci giorni passati tra bellezze marine, acropoli e natura. Oggi vi racconto qualcosa sulla città di rodi, e soprattutto sulla sua famosa colossale statua in bronzo che è stata una delle sette meraviglie del mondo antico.

Rodi è la quarta isola più grande della Grecia e si trova molto vicino alle coste della Turchia, possiede un grande porto molto attrezzato ed ha le sue origini antichissime, oltre 600 anni prima di Cristo. Ma veniamo alla famosa statua. Il colosso fu eretta nel 3° sec. a.C. per festeggiare una vittoria contro Demetrio il figlio di Alessandro Magno, che aveva assediato la città di Rodi con un esercito di 40.000 uomini.

A nulla valsero le decine di catapulte sulle navi, puntate contro le forti mura della città, dopo molti mesi una tempesta distrusse molte navi ed allora Demetrio decise di costruire una grande torre d'assedio per lanciare pietre in modo migliore, ma anche questo non portò nessuna conseguenza. Dopo un anno di assedio il generale Politemo organizzò una flotta di Rodi e scacciò i nemici. Per festeggiare la vittoria, gli abitanti di Rodi decisero di costruire un'enorme statua in bronzo, alta ben 32 metri e tenuta in piedi da una struttura di putrelle in ferro all'interno. La statua fu dedicata al dio Elio, figlio del Sole e per realizzarla impiegarono 12 anni.

Purtroppo la statua restò in piedi per 67 anni, quando nel 223 a.C un terremoto devastante la fece crollare. Sappiamo da fonti certe che fu la più grande statua mai realizzata dall'uomo ed entrò di diritto nelle Sette Meraviglie del Mondo Classico. Ora al suo posto, all'ingresso del porto ci sono due grandi colonne con due daini sopra di esse, il daino è un animale molto comune sull'isola di Rodi.

La città è ancora recintata da potenti mura, rafforzate in epoca medievale e arricchite con un castello, monumenti, chiese e palazzi nobiliari, anche perchè per oltre due secoli fu dominata dalla repubblica di Genova. Poi arrivarono i Cavalieri Ospitalieri, di Rodi e di Malta che presero il possesso dell'isola. La città vecchia è molto turistica, con decine di locali per bere e mangiare la tipica cucina greca, ma possiamo anche trovare notevoli botteghe di artigianato locale e di artisti.
