LOS GALLOS DE BULLAUDY

Hola, hivers, hoy me atrevo a compartir algo que sucedió en el año 2011, cuando la galería La Jungla, del Centro Cultural Huellas, en esos momentos bajo mi dirección, se honró al acoger una exposición personal del maestro de la Plástica cubana Kamyl Bullaudy y, a petición del artista, realicé la curaduría y escribí las palabras al catálogo.

El nombre de la exposición era Gallos de Lidia e incluía cuarenta acuarelas sobre cartulina y una escultura realizada con láminas de bronce, en total fueron cuarenta y una obras las expuestas. Esa muestra se mantuvo abierta al público durante un mes a partir de su inauguración el 28 de junio, como parte de las actividades de la Fiesta Mayor del Campesinado Cubano, nuestra Jornada Cucalambeana, que es una auténtica celebración de las tradiciones montunas. La figura del gallo fino no podía faltar en un acontecimiento de esa índole y Kamyl trajo una excelente propuesta que resultó muy bien acogida por tuneros y visitantes.

La maestría del artista, su dominio del difícil arte de plasmar con acuarelas la imagen del ave preferida de los guajiros cubanos se hizo sentir. Fue notable la afluencia de público durante los treinta días que duró la muestra. Bullaudy logró cautivar a los amantes de las artes visuales con su estilo único, su pincelada precisa y el original uso de los colores, mostrándonos gallos salidos de su fértil imaginación, no retratos fieles de gallos reales, sino otros fabulados por él, fantásticos, coloridos, dinámicos. Parecía que de un momento a otro saltarían de los cuadros y comenzarían a lanzar sus inconfundibles llamados al combate a muerte.

Ante una exposición como esa, busqué una manera diferente para escribir lo que aparecería en el catálogo y decidí hacerlo en una especie de prosa poética, que fuera brotando libre, sin la camisa de fuerza de ninguna estrofa específica, que fluyera armoniosamente a la par de las imágenes salidas de la mente y la mano del amigo pintor. Así vieron la luz los siguientes atrevimientos:

COMO GALLO FINO

En cada revuelo se juega la vida, la sangre en sus músculos (resortes perfectos para la embestida), hierve, se subleva, se enciende, crepita. El ave marcial derrocha osadía, su instinto de macho, no cede, no tiembla y el hombre lo admira, lo admira. Ya lo hizo Mariano, ya lo hizo Linares y Kamyl Bullaudy no pudo abstenerse de plasmar al gallo en su obra atrevida.

Así nos entrega su visión de artista y en sus pinceladas sobre cartulina todo es movimiento, lumbre colorida, pasión y equilibrio, oficio y medida. La luz y la sombra cantan su armonía, como el gallo canta anunciando el día, como el gallo fino, que, aunque sea esculpida en metal su imagen, asombra la vista, porque es arraigada costumbre guajira respetar al gallo por su valentía y amar su plumaje cuando el Sol lo irisa.

Por eso La Jungla, nuestra galería, se llena de júbilo y ya los invita, con Kamyl Bullaudy a soñar la vida, cuando de sus manos sinceras nos brinda, como paladines, sus Gallos de Lidia.

Han transcurrido ya catorce años, y aún la gente me pregunta cuándo se montará otra exposición como aquella. Ojalá suceda pronto, La Jungla, que actualmente pertenece a la filial tunera de la Fundación Nicolás Guillén, sigue siendo un espacio expositivo codiciado por relevantes artistas visuales del territorio y del país.

BULLAUDY'S ROOSTERS

Hello, hivers, today I dare to share something that happened in 2011, when the La Jungla gallery at the Centro Cultural Huellas, then under my direction, was honored to host a solo exhibition by Cuban visual artist Kamyl Bullaudy. At the artist's request, I curated the exhibition and wrote the words for the catalog.

The exhibition was titled Gallos de Lidia and included forty watercolors on cardboard and a sculpture made with bronze sheets. A total of forty-one works were on display. This exhibit remained open to the public for a month following its opening on June 28th, as part of the activities for the Cuban Peasant Festival, our Jornada Cucalambeana, a true celebration of mountain traditions. The figure of the fine rooster was a must at an event of this nature, and Kamyl brought an excellent proposal that was very well received by residents of Las Tunas and visitors.

The artist's mastery, his command of the difficult art of capturing the image of the Cuban guajiros' favorite bird in watercolors, was evident. The attendance was notable during the thirty-day exhibition. Bullaudy managed to captivate lovers of the visual arts with his unique style, precise brushwork, and original use of colors, showing us roosters born from his fertile imagination—not faithful portraits of real roosters, but ones he invented, fantastic, colorful, and dynamic. It seemed as if at any moment they would leap out of the paintings and begin shouting their unmistakable calls to combat to the death.

Faced with an exhibition like this, I looked for a different way to write what would appear in the catalog and decided to do it in a kind of poetic prose, one that would flow freely, without the straitjacket of any specific stanza, flowing harmoniously alongside the images emerging from the mind and hand of my painter friend. This is how the following daring works came to light:

LIKE A FINE ROOSTER

In every flurry, his life is at stake, the blood in his muscles (perfect springs for the charge), boiling, revolting, igniting, crackling. The martial bird exudes boldness, his macho instinct; he doesn't give in, he doesn't tremble, and man admires him, admires him. Mariano did it, Linares did it, and Kamyl Bullaudy couldn't resist capturing the rooster in his daring work.

This is how he delivers his artistic vision, and in his brushstrokes on cardboard, everything is movement, colorful light, passion and balance, craft and measure. Light and shadow sing their harmony, like the rooster crowing, announcing the day, like the fine rooster, who, even though his image is sculpted in metal, astonishes the eye, because it is a deep-rooted Guajira custom to respect the rooster for its courage and to love its plumage when the sun illuminates it.

That is why La Jungla, our gallery, is filled with joy and already invites you, along with Kamyl Bullaudy, to dream of life, when from his sincere hands he offers us, like paladins, his Fighting Roosters.

Fourteen years have passed, and people still ask me when another exhibition like that one will be mounted. Hopefully, this will happen soon. La Jungla, which currently belongs to the Las Tunas branch of the Nicolás Guillén Foundation, continues to be a coveted exhibition space for prominent visual artists from the region and the country.
