Photography in the Mountains of Mammoth Lakes - A Winter Wonderland
Winter is a magical time in the mountains and it's perhaps one of my personal favorite times of the year. In the mountains of Mammoth Lakes with its sparkling white blanket of snow and breathtaking scenery, it's a photographer's dream come true. I took this photo in the late morning before the sun way too high in the sky and before the snow started to melt. I loved this little bit of winding road and how it almost lead to the mountains in the distance.
Since there was so much white and only a little bit of color I wanted to keep with that creative look so I only kept a little bit of color to really lead the eyes down the road toward the mountain. To take great photos in the mountains during winter, you need the right gear. Invest in a good-quality camera, lens, and tripod if you need one. I shot this on my Canon 80D. If you plan on taking photos in snowy conditions, make sure your camera is weather-resistant and bring some cleaning clothes to be safe.
The snow can be a challenging environment to photograph in because it reflects light, making it difficult to get the right exposure. Experiment with different shutter speeds and aperture settings to find the perfect balance. While the grand, sweeping landscapes of Mammoth Lakes are certainly awe-inspiring, don't overlook the smaller, more intimate details. Look for patterns in the snow, the way it clings to tree branches, and the way it reflects the light.
Don't be afraid to get creative with your photography. Experiment with different perspectives and compositions. The winter landscapes of Mammoth Lakes offer endless opportunities for creative expression.
