Visiting the Amazing Botanical Garden of Kerdalo in Brittany

avatar

Hello dear Gardeners and happy Sunday to all !

Today I wanted to share with you a visit to a truly exceptional garden. It's a wide valley that narrows as it slopes down towards an inlet that runs through the small town of Tréguier in Northern Brittany. We visited this garden yesterday afternoon, but it was like living this tour again as I prepared this article full of images of species I didn't know yet the day before and which, like all my other plant encounters, make me want to learn more and more about Nature, gardens and plants !

Below, you can see an overview of the site which is particularly vast, you will find more information in the following part, but this one is 17 hectares and shelters more than 5000 plants... Personally, it makes me dream !

IMG_9629.JPG

History & presentation

Born in 1901 in Saint Petersburg (Russia), Peter Wolkonsky spent a large part of his life painting with his mother, mainly in Italy and Provence. Later, he drew and created gardens.

In 1965, he began work on Kerdalo on the acidic and hilly land of an old farm overlooking the river Jaudy, opposite the old town of Tréguier. Ponds, waterfalls, a water staircase, a grotto and pavilions were built in a few years. With the help of great nurserymen such as Harold Hillier of Winchester, the choice of plants was made meticulously, both for their botanical rarity and especially for their colours. More than 5,000 plants will find their place in these 17 hectares. After his death in 1997, Kerdalo was taken over by his daughter Isabelle and her husband Timothy, and despite the storm of 1999, flooding, leaking ponds and the occasional lack of water, the gardens have now been restored to their original splendour.

This may seem contradictory, but we will start this tour with the buildings as a whole, as these form the centre from which all the roads through the garden lead. As mentioned above, this was originally a simple old farmhouse. This was extended by successive additions until it became the manor house that can be seen today... Everything is made of granite typical of the region and of Brittany in general. Last time I checked, the garden - and the building - have been bought by Christian Louboutin, which must tell you something ^^ This is the reason why we could not, with regret, visit the interior.

We start the visit with the plain of the Araucarias. These are very old trees that have kept this aspect from the end of the ages. I almost expected to see a diplodocus or an iguanodon coming from behind these thorny trees. Their nickname made me smile: desperation of the monkeys. I guess it's for the obvious reason that the thorny trunks would prevent anyone from climbing to the top ^^

I discovered among the dry leaves that had fallen from the previous season, some cones that seem a bit special and that I will surely try to germinate and grow in the future.

IMG_9562.jpg

IMG_9559.JPG

IMG_9557.JPG

After this first part, we go back through this small stone portico and we end up on this pond with its water lilies and its pagoda at the end. Once again, we come across new species, most of them exotic. The interest of being in a valley and according to a certain exposure, really lies in the idea of having different exposures and humidity rates depending on whether you are on one or the other side. These thoughts apply to all gardens, but it's particularly obvious in this one, as you go effortlessly from an almost hot and humid part to a drier and more exposed one...

For each species that interested me, I photographed the label that accompanied it, so that you and I can do our research and perhaps succeed in finding the plant or its seeds.... As you can imagine, I didn't put all my photos in this article, I just put my favorites and that's not bad. We would have quickly reached more than 200, haha !....

Below are three rather imposing cork oaks. Again below, you will find a detail of their amazing bark, full of reliefs that seem to be as many mounts, valleys and hills sculpted by time and erosion.

IMG_9569.JPG

IMG_9571.JPG

After the big pond, which I couldn't get a good picture of - the weather was particularly good and the light was often too strong to make good pictures... and sometimes pictures at all ^^ - we went down into the valley, towards the inlet that borders and ends the garden. All our progress was in a kind of tropical forest of Gunnera or 'giant rhubarb'. Once again, we felt like we were in a primitive forest, ready to meet an antediluvian animal... As you can see, I could have been an archaeologist and it is also to immerse myself in times gone by... or to come that I became a writer.

After a few tens of minutes of walking, we arrive at the small, tiny Italian cave of which I could only obtain two images of the interior, the whole had the sun in the back and thus all in backlight ! As its name indicates, it is a grotto inspired by the Italian Renaissance, all decorated with marine figures, mermaids. It is really beautiful and I recommend you to go and see some pictures on the Net, it is really worth it !

IMG_9593.JPG

IMG_9601.JPG

IMG_9602.JPG

IMG_9603.JPG

Below are some of the seeds I collected, but I think I'll do a dedicated post on this. In the third image you will find a detail of a spider web shimmering in the late afternoon sun.

IMG_9619.jpg

IMG_9618.JPG

IMG_9625.JPG

Then we go back to the buildings and visit the slopes above them, which we had not yet explored. This is the warm part of the garden with a lot of Mediterranean plants, mimosas and aloes... As these are plants I know quite well and we were towards the end of our tour, I took a few less pictures.

Finally, we still wanted to see the four squares below the house, but unfortunately these were temporarily closed to visitors and we had to cut our visit short !

IMG_9586.JPG

IMG_9616.JPG

IMG_9639.JPG

Let's finish with this last picture which I found very beautiful. Indeed, these are all the labels that are not used in the garden at the moment. It is really poetic to see all these scientific indications with Latin names, gathered in a big tree of metal and knowledge... And you, what do you think about it ?

IMG_9640.JPG

As you may have realized, this is really a park, a cuttings garden where you can spend days and find all sorts of different plants and seeds. I imagine it must be very different depending on whether you come in summer, autumn or winter !

I hope that this article of visit and presentation will have pleased you, interested you and maybe even made you want to go and make your own visit if you are in the area :)

I wish you a nice end of summer, take good care of yourself and your loved ones, see you soon !

Personnellement, ça me fait rêver !

IMG_9629.JPG

Oh WOW what a stunning place! I'm adding it to my Google maps lists of places to go. I love inspiring gardens and this one is incredible. @sjarvie5 might love it too

You might find this funny but I've never heard of Christian Louboutin ... I had to Google him haha. Clearly I don't follow fashion!!!

This garden is indeed amazing and it should be so nice to live close by to have the possibility to come and visit, maybe once a month... Here at home, we’ve a book about it and the colors during the fall... God ! Looking magnificent :)

Thanks for introducing @sjarvie5 here ! I didn’t know her, and I’m already seeing plenty of points of connection 😉

You might find this funny but I've never heard of Christian Louboutin ... I had to Google him haha. Clearly I don't follow fashion!!!

I just find it ... super COOL, haha ^^
I studied textile design so, close to fashion, according to this I know some kind of stuff about this world... and I’m also surrounded by people working their superficial skills... Helped me a lot to get rid of mine’s !

Love the way you’re thinking and your style dear @riverflows ! Always a pleasure to read you here 💚

How was your weekend going ?

No treatment available… as it is very deep, my body attacks itself.

Yes, second day that is good… no rough mornings. So I will be over the flu any moment now. 🤓🎉
We will be moving 5 September to a temporary accommodation (the new rental) until our big move later on or until the end of contract end of June. Move moves coming up.
I won’t unpack now, as the house is furnished, just clothes and personal things I unpack. So no work later.

Thank you so much @anttn 😊 have a wonderful evening too!
So packing boxes the next days bit by but.
