Some Remarkable Places around the Ardèche town of Thueyts - Hikes in Wild Areas, Rivers, Caves and Ruins [EN -FR]

avatar

Often I prefer to talk about a particular place, a building or a complex circumscribed to a precise area, but when I dream of a place I love, then I go back to my tangible or mental images and as today, I propose an article which deals more with a set of places where I went and which marked my course of pleasure and good shared moments.

To tell you the truth, it is my brother who settled in this magnificent region but very remote, less accessible and it is undoubtedly from there that comes the preserved beauty of this region of Ardèche. To tell you the truth, a lot of our ancestors came from there and in a way we grew up in the stories of a place where we ourselves had not grown up.

IMG_4460.JPG

IMG_4457.JPG

IMG_4464.JPG

This is the view from the small castle of Thueyts, one of the medium-sized towns in this landlocked region where the road network follows the rivers and the valleys carved by them. In Thueyts, you will find the river Ardèche, which gave the region its name (as is the case almost everywhere in France).

As a tourist attraction, you can visit the famous Pont du Diable and the basaltic organs that characterize the intense volcanic activity that took place millions of years before our era.

IMG_4480.JPG

IMG_4482.JPG

IMG_4487.JPG

Here we find the river Lignon with its basaltic cliffs. It is a place where we spent long hours, especially swimming, whether in summer or winter, with a water temperature close to 0° !

IMG_4016.JPG

IMG_4021.JPG

This is the Ventadour castle, a building situated on a rocky spur of more than 70 meters and whose construction began in the 11th century. It is in the commune of Meyras and was classified as a historical monument in 1937.

IMG_4018.JPG

As this one has been under restoration for several years, this is the only picture I have of the interior... Through a keyhole !

IMG_4022.JPG

IMG_4024.JPG

The sky was particularly threatening that day, and that gave the castle a particularly heavy and heavy atmosphere... A bit Transylvanian style ^^ !

IMG_7124.JPG

IMG_7063.JPG

In a completely different register, here it was in the middle of spring when we were climbing the Montagne de St Marguerite, a place so named because of the chapel at the top (now surrounded by various antennas) but from where you can have an incredible 360° view of the surrounding area and a good part of the Ardèche and Drôme regions.

IMG_4167.JPG

IMG_4164.JPG

IMG_4149.JPG

IMG_4152.JPG

IMG_4145.JPG

This is the Cave of Abraham, named after the valley that bears the same name as the river below... If you go up to the top, you will find the Rock of Abraham, one of the highest points in the region... and of course, the magnificent view that goes with it !

When we discovered this cave, we seriously thought about doing a few days session there, in total autonomy, and it might be one of the upcoming projects of the summer :)

IMG_7285.JPG

IMG_7287.JPG

IMG_7294.JPG

IMG_7290.JPG

IMG_7292.JPG

Here, some ruins of an abandoned hamlet as one can find many in the hills and chestnut plantations. This complex is above the small town of Thueyts, at the place called 'Fargebelle'. There is also a via ferrata with a breathtaking view of the Ardèche gorges and with the Pont du Diable and the basaltic organs, it is a good place to spend a day or two...

IMG_7211.JPG

IMG_7267.JPG

IMG_7273.JPG

I will finish this tour of horizons with one of my favorite places, it is the corner of the village of Astet, upstream from Thueyts by going up the course of the Ardèche river. It is difficult to find a more preserved place than this one, with its forests of hundred-year-old beech trees, its thousand and one brooks, its pure luminous air and this feeling of total freedom !

IMG_7229.JPG

IMG_7246.JPG

IMG_7248.JPG

As you will have understood, the Ardèche is a region dear to my heart and one that will not be easily conquered by anyone. If you follow the paths and persist in discovering hidden places by yourself, you will be rewarded beyond your expectations. But because of the terrain, things have to be earned, and that's what I love about these rugged, pure, time-defying places.

I hope you enjoy these few places presented in this more open format than just one, but this way I imagine you can get different ideas if you visit this beautiful region !

Thank you for your time, I hope you had a good weekend and wish you a pleasant week :)

Beautiful. through your posts @anttn, I get to see this region.
there is something so Neanderthal about it that looking at the photos, they seem so familiar. they remind me of the pyrenees of course, of the Sierra de tramontana in Mallorca, of Alta Garrotxa, but there seems to be something deeper that I can not put my finger on.
you have woken my curiosity with the comment about the Via Ferrata.. just another excuse to pack my son and hop over and explore.
thank you for sharing this !

You're most welcome :)

It's funny because I can see very well - without being able to define it precisely myself - what you mean! A kind of confusion and recognition at the same time. I believe that the earth inhabits us as much as we think we do.

If you want, I can ask for more advices on what ferrata to do, I think my sister-in-law does quite a few in the area !

Nice! I really like that cave and it looks that there might be some more rocks in that area that are climbable.

Those columns of basalt reminded me of a very similar place in my country that dealed with volcanic activities a long while ago. I know they are not so common, or at least not on this part of the globe, so I'm really happy whenever I get to discover a place which has them, even if it happens just virtually :)

Indeed, it doesn't happen every time... I think it needs specific pressure and other geological aspects, but here it's basalt, I guess it should be a close type of mineral in your part of the country !

Thanks you for your (virtual) visit ^^ !
Take good care ✌️

Fantastic photos of the region. It must be extra special as your family came from there. It looks like an enchanting area filled with surprises and secrets in the woods, caves and castles. I love that France is bedecked with castles even if some are ruins. One day I will visit the Ardeche.

@anttn
I think your post should come with with a statutory warning
No way this does not seem like a travel post. The way you have captured those images from various angles it creates an impression of being transported to another land.
If I were to overlook the pics with scaffolding I would say the untouched beauty of South eastern France is something that creates an impression of being transported to another period of time.
Incredible I must say. I think you can use leo threads https://leofinance.io/threads to spread the reach of your post and be seen by more people.

First of all, many thanks @thetimetravelerz for supporting and appreciating my work :)

I followed your advice for one of my recent article, but I wonder if it's would not be considered as spamming ? After, I really enjoyed this new feature and I also thanks you for letting me know in this very kind way :)

May you have an excellent weekend !

Hello @anttn I really liked your work and felt that all the hard work and detailing that goes into ceating a good post should get the maximum exposure.
You are welcome to create a thread on any topic without the fear of it being considered a spam. The reason for that is that the leo threads is being developed as the decentralized version of twitter.
So all types of content is welcome.
I good way to get more exposure to your post is to use the proper tag or any tag that you feel relevant.
When I say tags I mean this as shown in the image below

image.png
So by using one of the trending tags you can be assured that more people come and visit your post. Well that is the general idea.
If you know how things work on twitter with tags it is the same idea. For me twitter was initially hard as I would post there without any tags and it was much later that I discovered how I could use tags to increase visibility and interaction on my tweets.

Thanks for the kind words @anttn
As a content creator myself I know how much efforts we put in to document and create content. The nature of Hive is such that we have a 7 day window to get it the maximum exposure for receiving rewards.
So need to act on at double quick speed to get the maximum exposure. However once the momentum sets in the curators tend to discover your content more often and the votes and comments happen.
I am so glad what I did worked for you.
Yes I would check out your community for sure and join it too.

You're welcome !

Yeah, it can be tuff to "score" in the first two days, as it's the time curators generally come... After, well.. there's a lot of fresh content for the good and the bad at the same time ^^ !

Have a good day dear 🌟 !
