October Garden Journal : Last Survivor of the Windowsill Garden - Ultimate Harvest and Preparation to Winter [EN - FR]

(Edited)

Hello dear gardeners and plant lovers !

Although autumn is still mild, we can feel that Nature is already preparing for the approaching winter. You only have to read the many signs in the gardens to realize this.

Following problems in the collective gardens (invasion of people who do not come to garden, make fires and sleep on the spot...), I tended not to invest enough in the last few months. I didn't really have the opportunity to do so either with the summer and the beginning of the new school year, which was busy at work.

However, this does not prevent us from enjoying our previous efforts, reaping what there is to reap and appreciating what there is to appreciate! Let's look on the bright side :)

Also, as we are in the process of finding a house this winter, we will - if all goes well - have a garden by spring 2023 ! But let's not anticipate any further and focus on the present.

It all starts with the last survivor of my windowsill garden experiment. It is purslane that has weathered this summer's drought with a ceramic jar as a water reservoir. As you can see, it's doing just fine !

IMG_4728.JPG

IMG_4731.JPG

Let's spend a little time on the small jungle just below the same window. Here too, everything is going well, even if I should spend a little more time there...

To tell the truth, even if it's interesting to play with the constraints, I'm getting a bit tired of doing things wrong. I think that sometimes it's just as well to wait until you have the right conditions to do things the way you want to. The idea then is to work on finding and establishing those right conditions !

IMG_4733.jpg

Below you will find the few cuttings of succulents that are growing as well as can be expected, despite the fact that I took them at the opposite time to the recommended time (June - July, when this should usually be done in March - April). At least I'll know for the future !

IMG_4734.JPG

IMG_4738.JPG

But let's go and see what's going on in the collective gardens where, as I said earlier, the atmosphere and the social climate has clearly deteriorated.

This will not prevent us from appreciating this beautiful and glowing Virginia creeper at the entrance ! Then come a whole series of calendulas, each one more flowery than the other, with some Aster that I find particularly cute :D

IMG_4636.JPG

IMG_4643.JPG

IMG_4647.JPG

IMG_4651.JPG

These green chillies are one of the few vegetables that can still be found in our plantations. I love their last little white flowers, simples and delicates.

IMG_4659.JPG

IMG_4655.JPG

There are still some late cherry tomatoes...

IMG_4644.JPG

On a neighbouring plot, there are Physalis soon to be ripe and full of Vitamins :)

IMG_4668.JPG

Here, a pumpkin which is quite small... Really small, it can't be much more than 12 centimeters !

IMG_4669.JPG

I have had the opportunity to harvest quite a few seeds of this red pigweed. Quite few, but if I imagine reseeding them next season, there will surely be something to enjoy ! Same family as Quinoa, but with smaller seeds.

IMG_4685.JPG

On another plot, we would almost be jealous of this squash as ours gave nothing or so little... We must have made a mistake with the compost dosages, lol. But another reason must be that we ended the season with potted plants, and deep down, I think they didn't appreciate being moved around...

IMG_4682.JPG

Speaking of compost... Here is my poetic encounter with this mushroom that I don't know, alone on its log, on top of compost bins. When I saw it, I said to myself "Ah, here is a garden all to itself ".

IMG_4675.JPG

Finally, I harvested a good small batch of these wild apples, a bit sour, but sweet and with a rather thick skin. The flesh is red, almost like the outside, it's quite strange. I'm thinking of trying a little lacto-fermentation with them, you'll see that up close..!

IMG_4692.JPG

IMG_4695.JPG

So much for today's visit to the garden. In truth, there's a lot more left than my title would suggest, but it's always the surprise effect haha !

I hope you enjoyed reading this article and that you liked it. I thank you in advance for your requests or contributions of clarifications :)

I wish you a nice day or evening, take good care of you and your loved ones !

IMG_4659.JPG

IMG_4655.JPG

On retrouve quand même quelques tomates cerises tardives...

IMG_4644.JPG

Great to see the last survivors of the garden.
Such a shame that some people don’t respect the communal gardens.
But soon you have your own and can start 🤞🏻🤞🏻Really start without having to improvise.

Love the little mushroom all by itself, standing tall. Beautiful.
Wow you still have some cherry tomatoes 🍅 very cool. Yes, the peppers are still there and a few more will ripen.

Thanks for sharing with us @anttn 😊👋🏻

Yeah, I don't really understand why people who like the place come and trash it... It seems particularly absurd to me!

Yes, lots of micro-adventures to come !

Thanks for sharing with us @anttn 😊👋🏻

You're more than welcome, thanks you for visiting dear @littlebee4 !
Sorry also, I miss some of you're comments, need to catch up a bit...

How are you doing those days ?

I hope for the best and I wish you a nice Friday and coming weekend ✌️

It is something that is not understandable for people like us…

Yay… looking forward to reading them all 😉🤓

Thank you @anttn 😊 no worries… all fine. Busy days and other things to do, I so understand. Saying me… multitasking all the way hehehe 🤭

I’m fine thank you. Still in waiting mode as the company is very slow on updates when we finally can move. Maybe it will go into a whole new direction even. We will see in the next weeks.
I bought a new camera and are going through the photos from our holidays in the States, to edit them…
So that’s nice, but a lot of work next to everything else. So I share little bits.
Can’t wait for the weekend to go out with it again 😎📸

Thank you kindly, hope you are well too. And all the best for you, enjoy your weekend (that is on it’s way)
Big hugg 🤗🤗 have fun!

Yes, really strange ways of thinking !

Haha, sometimes it's a bit hard to keep up :) About comments and implications...

Which camera model is it? I'm curious to know what you chose.

Also about your new move, I hope everything goes well for you... although, as you say, it might be in a completely different direction !

Thanks you, it's going well, preparing lasagna among other things ^^
See you soon :D

I know… @anttn so many notifications I get every day… filtering them out and catching up can be a long job.

I was choosing between a Sony A1, Nikon Z9 or a Canon R5. All mirrorless… my old one was a DSLR.
I ended up for the middle of the range one. That suited my style and subjects that I shoot… so it’s the Canon R5. So far truly happy with it.
2 of my US adventure posts… all the photos in there are taken with it.

Thank you so much. Let’s hope it will… thinking positive here.

Good to hear. Lasagna is nice… haven’t cooked that in a while.
Take care my friend. 👋🏻😊😘
Talk soon…

It was indeed a delight, I too have been waiting a long time :)

This winter seems like it's going to tell so much on these little and beautiful plants. You have a really nice garden, all the flowers seems to have their own stories to tell and it feels like you have listened to all of their stories and I'm sure that's one thing that made me enjoy reading this.

Oh wow, that pumpkin looks really small and those apples look really tasty too, the red color is making me want some, hehe. You have almost everything you need to prepare a nice dish and that's really so cool. The garden is really beautiful and I pray winter be good for them.

Hope you had a great day friend? It's been just a day I heard from you and it's feeling like a week, lolz. Please don't mind me, I just want to know how my friend is doing.

It's a good thing you are trying to make that an habit, it's a good way to exercise the mind and body too.

Yes, I was able to get some rest and I look forward to having more rest, thank you for your concern Anttn, please is that your actual name?

Yes I will, you too 🥰.

Oooh, so gorgeous, @anttn ! What a beautiful variety of edibles... I adore purslane, though I was weeding some that was trampled on the paving stones today; it grows prolifically by itself here 😋🥰🌿🌿🌿🌿

Hi, anttn, looks like your windowsill doing great work. You talk about purslane which is a wild vegetable in India we don't eat that because it is a little bit slimy. we have two types red and green. Your pumpkin looks nice (ya whole garden looks nice) you have the opportunity should celebrate ha ha Halloween with your pumpkin. How is the weather there? we have lots of wind and rain gray days here. Garden season is over some flowers are still flowering .started new sweet peas on plants don't know any time frost will appear.at night now going to 4c days without sun low down energy. make us tired. but still, life goes on. I made a post for UTF but some part is left. what is the deadline for that? Hope you are doing well take care. have a nice Sunday. greetings🙏😊

yeah, I like that slimy touch :)

Here it’s still very tempered, more rain but that’s good for earth !

I’m afraid it’s too late for the challenge, but if it’s good for you, you can always share it..!

Good luck with the last plants in the garden 🤞🏼 I hope you’ll have some good days before winter :)

Take care and restore your energy !
I hope you had a good weekend 🌟
