Iris and Peonies - Visiting two Flower Growers in the Fields

avatar
(Edited)

Hi dear Hivers and Flower Lovers, I hope you have had a good week. Yesterday it was about the Moon and today, as my stay in the Drôme is about to come to an end, I wanted to share with you a double visit to flower growers located a few kilometers apart in the valley where the Drôme river flows.

These two companies do not really compete with each other, and I would even say that they complement each other as the first one we are going to see produces peonies and the second one irises. Indeed, each of these two species belongs to its own genus and then quite simply, their flowers are different, in shape and color, not to mention culture.

I never share about a flower in these #MarketFriday articles, so I think I'll make up for it this time ^^ ! This community initiated by @dswigle allows us to go and see places and customs around the world that we would not have discovered otherwise. Thanks to her and without further ado, let's go on these two visits that took place on the same day !

DSC_1447.JPG

DSC_1434.JPG

The first place is called "Pivoines Rivière". I put here a link to go and have a look at their website, but I can already tell you that the company has been in existence since 1848 and that it is now in its 6th generation to look after the more than 600 varieties that the company offers.

DSC_1420.JPG

Today we are only visiting their "small" field as the others are scattered throughout the surrounding countryside... In the background, if you look closely, you can see the Tour de Crest, which is one of the highest medieval keep in France with its 52 meters height.

But let's get back to our flowers...!

DSC_1417.JPG

DSC_1409.JPG

Of course, I can't put everything here and that's why I recommend that you go to their website and have a look at their catalogue to see the crazy diversity of plants grown here !

DSC_1437.JPG

DSC_1440.JPG

So I'm sharing some of my favorites with you, but if you look at them again, they may be some of the most classic...

DSC_1441.JPG

DSC_1443.JPG

Some are fragrant while others have no smell at all.

DSC_1450.JPG

DSC_1451.JPG

One thing you should know about peonies is that there are three categories to simplify things: herbaceous peonies, shrubby peonies and finally hybrid peonies which are a mixture of the two previous categories.

DSC_1457.JPG

Here's another view of the place before we go for a walk in the sales area, which is also obviously full of wonderful, magnificent... although rather expensive !

DSC_1463.JPG

DSC_1467.JPG

DSC_1464.JPG

DSC_1469.JPG

This is where the different varieties offered for sale are represented. As indicated above, peonies are classified according to their type (herbaceous or shrubby). But in any case, you have to count between 30 and 60€ per plant, a little less for some and I think that at first, we will wait a little to have prepared our ground to buy some.

Another idea could be to try to get some out of peony rhizomes that are in the homes of people we know. Well, we'll see !

DSC_1465.JPG

Further on, there are greenhouses for cultivation and probably reproduction, but I believe that it is forbidden without being accompanied...

DSC_1471.JPG

I'm taking a catalogue with me so that I can order from them in the future and find out about the different varieties first.

DSC_1472.JPG

I'm "content" to buy a few postcards, and in particular one for @livinguktaiwan, who sent me a beautiful card from Taiwan as part of her Postcard Initiative :)

Now let's go for a quick trip to the second flower producer.

DSC_1606.JPG

Here at "Iris Val de Drôme" - this is their website - These are irises that are grown with passion. Since 2017, you can visit the 2 hectares of plantations where you can see more than 1200 different varieties of this same plant. If I'm not mistaken, there are more than 600 for sale. Huge, isn't it ?

DSC_1574.JPG

DSC_1560.JPG

DSC_1597.JPG

It is almost impossible to imagine the complexity of choosing from all these flowers, even if you quickly find your favorites. The cultivation of the iris also seems to be much simpler than that of the peony and the rhizomes multiply every year without any problem.

DSC_1517.JPG

DSC_1551.JPG

Here are the fields as far as the eye can see... Here, you don't necessarily find a shop, but at the entrance of the field, by the place where you arrive, you find an order form which allows you to note during your visit, the references of the irises that you would like to order.

DSC_1539.JPG

DSC_1494.JPG

These are some of my favorites, bearing in mind that unfortunately we could only spend half an hour in the fields as we were already late for another appointment.

DSC_1491.JPG

This is the one I liked the most, a subtle mix between the more common white and purple ones.

In any case, keep in mind that these two places can be visited and are quite close to each other. So check their schedules on their respective websites :)

I hope that this article will have pleased you and interested you, do not hesitate to ask me more questions. I thank you for your visit and wish you an excellent weekend, take good care of yourself,

Thanks again @anttn, great post once more! We like the irises much and the deep blue and white with a little yellow contrast are our favorites. The prices are crazy though! Makes us wonder how much the retailers sell? Best+!

Hey @sumotori !

Yeah, the price are quite high ! But I think it because it's some plants that they care about for 3 or 5 years... Young ones are less expensive for sure :)

the deep blue and white with a little yellow contrast

I too love this one 😊

Thanks, I wish you a good weekend ✌️

I've never seen so many flowers in the fields, it's so beautiful. Do they cut them to sell or leave them in the fields to be admired?

And that's a lovely postcard, thank you for showing me 😊

It was the first time for me too, makes me thinking of the tulips fields in Holland..!
About the iris, they just cut a part of the roots and sell it as it multiplies quite impressively :) For the peonies, they stay in the fields and only the ones in pot are for sale...

And that's a lovely postcard

Yeah ! You're most welcome,
I've yours with me in my notebook 😊

Have a good weekend !

Ps: just seen your last article, I think I will appreciate it a lot, but I want to take the time to visit and read it well, so see you there ;-)

What a glorious post, thank you for sharing this beauty, dear @anttn ... I have a few irises in the garden I guardian: big purple-blue ones and big bright white ones... There's also a patch of smaller wild irises at the bottom of the wilder part of the garden: they flower very briefly, and are very small, but the most extraordinary colour and beauty. Mmmm - the scent of irises is so divine.

Many thank dear @clareartista, you're most welcome :)

I would be curious to see the little ones your mentioning as there were some in the Iris garden, the lady told us that it was some Siberian Iris. We don't have this flower yet as we still need to finish the purchase of the house, but I think we'll welcome some for sure !

Have a good Sunday 😇🌺

Ciao again dear @anttn ! You will laugh: I went down to the bottom of the garden, to find the wee irises, in case they were flowering (I think it might be past their time, though), but I got overwhelmed at the point where the 2m-high nettles began! The jungley part is quite soft in places, but I really couldn't get beyond a certain point, as it is simply too over-grown and I need a Man With A Scythe to come and help me!! Instead, I took a detour through a wee overgrown path that is still JUST manageable - and got quite bitten and scratched, and covered in burrs - and found a lot of wild asparagus - yey!
Anyways; I did some searching, and came up with this - https://www.naturamediterraneo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17380 which is the nearest similar-looking plant and flower to the small wild one I found: Iris Feotidissmia (!) or Chamaeiris foetidissima - which is a funny name for such a beautiful bloom. The ones I know are more maroon and creamy and very lovely, but I never noticed a horrible smell from them!

Haha! Indeed, it can go very fast :) I like nettles on my plate, but when they're that size, it's clearly indecent 😂
I did indeed laugh, but I hope you didn't get too scratched either !

The one you sent me is simply superb, I'll be curious to see yours, but now I have to go back to the place to see if they have this variety.. I'll probably spot it by the smell so ^^ !

Thank you dear @clareartista :) Don't hesitate to send me a picture if you manage to get through the prickly walls ! Have a good day 😇

You did flowers! Thank you. Whatever you post poat for your market, always seems to be a winner! Peonies are so gorgeous and it doesn't hurt that many smell heavenly. I have a few bushes at each of the houses. (Did I mention I really like them?) They are one of the flowers that I truly look forward to every year!

I think getting them from friends is the way to go! Nobody can beat free, plus there is something so nice about carrying on from your friendship. You have plenty of time to enjoy watching them grow, gardens are always evolving and growing in different ways. Change is imminent with them. Or perhaps that is just my garden. Flowers in general have gone up since /covid began, every year since. I paid exactly double the price for annual flowers that I put in to boost color for the summer garden. It will never go down, they have discovered that we will pay a higher price!

Do you know that I have never been to a peony farm/garden like that? I can only imagine how amazing it is to walk around there, witnessing the dozens upon dozens (upon even more dozens!)That would make my head spin, seeing all of those.

You hit upon another one of my favorites, the iris~ What is not to love, especially with the loveliness of the bearded iris? I like your choice of the variegated purple and white bearded iris. They make such a statement in the early part of spring! I only plant two bulbs if I want a different variety. They can be split every year when they get a couple of years old. I am in the enviable position of having too many and now and my friends and family trade them. I give a lot of them away for fear of having no room someday! :) It is a good problem to have, yes? The tulip farm I went to also had a section for the iris - and honestly, the beautiful statement it made in bunches like that was pretty incredible! I loved your post!~ It was so much fun and now I will be perusing the site, if only for curiosity and a beauty fix. :) Thanks so much for taking us with you!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

You did flowers!

Yeah, phew... Finally haha ^^!

Indeed, I think we will end up choosing this more obvious and virtuous path of sharing shoots and rhizomes! It has indeed become unaffordable and, even if it represents a labour ratio and the increase in the cost of living, I still find it a bit embarrassing compared to things that nature offers us for a little effort !

I can't believe you haven't visited a peony farm like this yet, but I'm even happier to have been able to share it with you! It was my first time too, even though I come from this region and have a lot of family within a 10km radius ^^

It is a good problem to have, yes?

Definitely 😇 Having (too much) or enough of those beauties, this indeed quite a dreamed situation haha ! That was awesome to discover more about those two flowers in the same day and I'm really happy you enjoyed this one :)

Have a good starting week 😘 🌺
