An Incredible Low-Tech Water Harvesting System & Update on the Desperate little Urban Garden
Don't get me wrong, it's the little garden we occupy that is desperate, not me ! It's winter here and for many reasons it's difficult to give this place its full potential... But more on that in the second half of this article !
For the first half, I wanted to share with you the discovery, which goes back several years, of a water harvesting technique. I named the Warka Tower !
In truth, I've known about it for a few years, but I hadn't had the presence of mind to talk about it here... The idea is to collect water from the sky, whether it comes from rain, but above all from dew. The latter is produced by a difference between night and day temperatures, when water from plants and soil evaporates and condenses... I am not an expert, but I think that without being one, we have all seen this natural phenomenon !

This project is by the Italian architect Arturo Vittori. You can find more information in this article where you can watch the film he made and on the page of the foundation he created. Launched in 2015, the project is to provide clean, drinkable and usable water for agriculture to populations that lack it.

source
Here is a diagram of how these towers work, which I also find very aesthetic. The orange net that serves as a textile collector is similar to that of the potato bags.

source
Here are the different models tested and experimented by the architect and his studio in close collaboration with the target populations.

A short explanation of the origin of the name "Warka"...
The name "Warka" comes from the Warka tree, which is a large wild fig tree, endemic to Ethiopia. It has an important symbolic value, it is the centre of the local community, fundamental to the local ecosystem, and provides a gathering place. In addition, it also has a spiritual significance, where people pray to God.

source
Let's finish with some details of these beautiful towers. You may think that I haven't gone into much detail, but if you follow the various links, you'll have more than enough to satisfy your curiosity and desire to know more !

source
As a conclusion, I will confess that one of my dreams is to erect one of these towers in my future garden in the countryside ! Probably right next to some of @samstonehill's cherished electro-culture experiments ! Well, not too close either, just in case of lightning... ^^ !
Visit and update the small Urban Garden in its winter form...
Let's leave the blue skies of Africa for this garden in which we were able to garden last season. Due to the conflict between the administration and a large number of members, the situation is not good. The members hardly come anymore and for good reason, the people in charge have decided to close the gardens at noon ! It's not easy to come if you can only come in the afternoon...
But let's get over these internal tensions and little arguments that don't interest me much ! I'm here for the plants, their growth and their care. Finally, it is true that all these events combined with the end of year celebrations and the season have made me less involved...
Above, our meagre and only harvest of the season, Jerusalem artichokes ! and a view of part of our modest hanging garden...
Some Physalis not yet ripe and perennial and dynamic succulents whatever the period, even more if they are covered with dew !
This is the abandoned part because it was closed to members in the middle of the summer... You may remember, I mentioned it as my plot was part of the condemned area. There is still a small group of us who defy the ban, but it has become a rather unkempt jungle. I trust Nature to regulate itself (otherwise I wouldn't be gardening) but it's probably the winter that gives it that spooky bayou atmosphere...!
An isolated passion fruit...
... and a meagre corncob just as lonely !
Some flowers remain like this rose and these calendula plants :)
And as a proof of the unseasonably warm temperatures, the mimosas are already in bud! But it's a bit like how I feel about the garden, I'm full of desire and ready to get started as soon as I can !
I hope you found this article interesting and informative ! Thank you for taking the time to read it, and please feel free to ask your questions and feelings in the comments :)
I wish you a great Sunday ! Take care of yourself and your loved ones,
<3

<3
That's really smart. And it could help many suffering countries. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Yeah, I really like that sort of system because it's accessible and practically free to make... True empowerment in my opinion :)
Thanks you for your visit and support 🍀 May you have a nice week ahead !

That garden needs a lot of work 🙁
That's for sure haha !
It's a shared one and the future of it is a bit uncertain with all the tensions ongoing in the association... But I hope I will still be able to garden here for an other season 🤞 ! Thanks you for visiting :)
Have a good week ahead 🌟 ✌️
This is great equipment and I'm so excited to see this kind of creativity
Glad you enjoyed this article and the content :D
Thank you so much
Fantastic! Today I discovered something new, that condensation system is phenomenal. I have a passion for growing plants and vegetables and I use the roof of the house to recover rainwater, but if it happens like this summer when it didn't rain for 3 months it was difficult. With a condensing system like this I could recover water every day, because where I live in Italy, in the Po Valley, the humidity at night is always over 90%, I absolutely have to try it! Thank you so much for sharing, happy Sunday.
I'm happy you discovered that through my article :)
Almost sure it would work perfectly in your region, which is beautiful by the way ! I've been several times, unfortunately just passing by, but I would love to discover more !
You can also check other system, there's some in Morocco too.
Thanks to you friend, if you pass by and stop here, feel free to ask me if you need advice on what to see and where to go ;).
I think this spring I'll try to build something similar, but I'll have to make it different, lower and wider, because where I live is hit by tornadoes during the spring and summer, if I made it high it would sweep it away.
I will not miss it if I come !
That could be a nice project to follow and yeah, a lower version is indispensable if there's such strong winds..! Don't hesitate to mention me if you post about it :D
A thousand thanks! Yes, if I manage to build it, work and time permitting, I will bring your post where I got the idea from and mention you. Happy weekend again 😉.
Looking forward to it ! If we find a house meanwhile, I'm sure I will try one too !
Take good care :)
Great! If you do, I hope you make a post, because I would like to see it, but I think you surely would.
Thank you friend, have a wonderful evening.
I will for sure 😉 Take good care ✌️
This year, since it is rainning and overcast most of the time, my son and me were finally luckey enough to eat some ripe faisalis !
usually, the frosts just burn the fruit before it has a chance to even ripen.
the plant look extremely happy and vigorous. maybe he is just adapting to what life threw his way.
best regards.
Yeah, it happen really often with those ! Glad you had some good ones :)
Thanks you for visiting, I wish you a good week ahead, take care 🌟✌️

Ever heard of Electroculture?
Yeah, I've read a bit on the subject, but I need to learn more by practicing now !
If you have a some nice articles about, I would be interested :) Already seen the saga of Samstonehill here !
Take care, I wish you a nice day 🍀
Cool! No I am new to the subject aswell, I have only read and few articles and never tried it xD
Nice :) It's really seems like an old and impressive technic, which I would say has been deliberately left out !
This is outstanding! Thank you for bringing me here. The elegance of this structure is undeniable though I am probably more confident drinking water from a source which has travelled through a mountain to reach me than water from the sky which these days contains so many intentional contaminants. But that's just me! No question this knowledge still has the potential to save our lives when in a tricky situation.
I see no reason why a structure like this could not also employ electroculture techniques. To a certain degree it probably already does but one would have to make sure electrical connections were made from the top of the structure down into the ground. Is it earthed for the purposes of lightning? If it is, this will massively help the plants around it.
That mimosa is so familiar. They grow all around here. Tu habites où?
I’m glad you liked it :)
To be honest, I had the same interrogations and fears about contaminants, mainly intentional ones ! The solution would be to filter the harvested water... but for sure, a good old mountain source is way more precious and secure !
I wonder if they thought about electroculture integrated in the structure, it would be an amazing combo indeed..!
We’re currently based in Paris, but we plan to move as soon as possible ! I would love your region, but it seems to far for my Parisian partner ^^
Have a great day, and thanks you again for sharing your impressive electroculture experiments :)
Wow - thats pretty awesome. Never seen anything like it !

Yeah, even though I've known about it for years, it still gives me the same effect !
Thanks you for your visit :D
Have a nice weekend !
I've heard of the idea but sadly, none of your images will load for me.
Ah ? That's strange, on which platform are you ? I guess you checked the links to see those towers..
Take good care and enjoy your weekend ✌️
All good today.
