An Exploration of the La Chapelle district by Day and Night
Hi everyone, I hope you're doing well ! Today I propose you a trip in this strange and dynamic area of the north of Paris. An area that we don't necessarily go to visit (or not at all ^^) if we go to the capital. And yet, it's still a very interesting place. Located a bit above the two train stations of this part of the city, the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l'Est, there are large structures that span the dozens of railway tracks and all this is crossed in a perpendicular way by the overhead tracks of the metro line 2...
But without further ado, let's embark on this structural and architectural exploration of this district !
For the moment, we are still in the "Goutte d'Or" district between Barbès and Château Rouge. The church above is already called "St Bernard de La Chapelle". It's a bit of a shame, but every time I pass by, it's closed and I've never been able to go inside. I imagine it's open when I pass by, but I don't have time ^^ !
If you look at the end of this picture, you will see the beginning of these bridges over the tracks... And as a bonus, you have our shadows in the beautiful low-angled afternoon light.
Here we are above the rails. It's an atmosphere I've always liked. You see the convoys of people arriving and those of people leaving for other horizons. It's quite funny, but if I look at it carefully, I have almost always lived near a station and often right above the tracks. I find that there is a particular energy, a dynamism of change and transition, whatever the direction and form of it...
Here is the aerial part of the metro line 2, 19th century structures that I have always loved and photographed a lot... Even if this is the first time I'm sharing this !
Interesting historical detail, the routes of line 2 and line 6 in Paris are the same as the walls and fortifications of Philippe Auguste, the seventh king of the Capetian dynasty who ruled at the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 12th. The traces of the past are much more than just traces and every day, even if we do not necessarily pay attention to them, the past lives on through our daily actions.
Another of those metal structures that cross the tracks, this time the ones that leave from the Gare de l'Est. It is perhaps best to take a map with you ;-)
This time, we are above the railway tracks of the Gare du Nord. I really like these sinuous, curved or straight lines of rails, trains and cables that criss-cross in all directions and yet, everything is quite harmonious, isn't it ?
The building on the third picture is the station control building if I'm not mistaken...
The day is almost over and I take advantage of this beautiful sunset to take some images with a nice open and powerful perspective. Technical detail, as on my most recent walks, I am accompanied by my Nikon D5500 camera and a Sigma 17-70mm lens.
Some views of these structures, all built with steel beams, which are not unlike the method used for the Eiffel Tower. And for good reason, they were built at the same time !
Some details of the limestone part of the metro track and of an ornament of the railing above the railway tracks. Which is quite similar in terms of aesthetics to the Wizard King's mace in... But I won't tell you more ^^
The evening progresses and we happen to be staying in the neighborhood. Here, my only drink of the evening, a green chartreuse, this beverage that I love among all, an alcohol made and distilled by the Carthusian monks and which contains more than 163 different plants, as much to say an excellent medicine with an incomparable taste !
On the way back, we pass by these aerial structures again and I take the opportunity to test some long aperture images and thus capture the sinuous and elongated light of the headlights of the vehicles and even of the metro when it decides to pass.
Here are a few more attempts to finish... I would have done more, but for that I would have to go out alone at night because my girlfriend, although quite tolerant, can be quite impatient to start moving when I start taking pictures !
However, I have the feeling that this modest and visual article will have conveyed to you a part of the atmosphere of the Chapelle district. I say part of it because it is also one of the Indian districts and you will notice that I didn't talk about this aspect at all ! That will be for another time :)
I thank you for your reading and visit, take good care of yourself and your loved ones !
See you soon,
<3
<3

It's good to see a district with no so many tourists. That would probably be a place which I would like to visit too. Until now I only visited places with tons of tourists, but recently a friend of mine moved to Paris, so when I visit her next time I will have a local guide 🙂
Great photos! I like those with long aperture. I have always wanted to do such photos! When my arm is better then I will take my heavy camera again 😉
To be honest it was one of rare time I've seen it with so less people ! The fact that it's one of the big Indian area makes it quite crowded usually, but for sure, tourists rarely come here 😂
This is great news ! I would be enchanted to meet both of you around if and when you come ! And very pleased to help you to carry that heavy camera hehe 😅 !
Hello @anttn
You have captured a very interesting perspective of La Chapelle
I went through your post more than once.
The landscape is familiar and so is the graffiti on the walls the inviting blue Parisian sky with a little clouds all ever inviting but one thing is missing and that is ....
lots of people
I have tried going to La Chapelle coming out of Gare Du Nord and also getting down at La Chapelle metro station and walking out.
One common thing has been lots of people and the place buzzing with activity.
Then I thought it might be a holiday or the pictures were taken during the lockdown.
However the length of shadows suggests that it could be early morning.
Which of my assumptions is correct.
Hope you are feeling better now and recovering fast.
Good health and happiness to you :)
Hehe ! It's almost always full, but that day I went in the morning quite early, then a few hours later and almost all day until the evening...! I had some errands and appointments in the neighborhood and I took advantage of it :) That and a little patience actually !
Tomorrow I will be fully healed and I hope it will be the same for you too 🤞😊
Take good care @thetimetravelerz
OK that explains it :)
Stay protected! With you doing so much all around we cannot see you getting ill and going down
Sending you some healing vibes take care @anttn
Thanks dear ! Think I received your waves, I’m 98,9% healed this morning 😉!
Have a good day ahead !
That is so good to know.
Take care and #stayblessed
it would be time for you to report for work or are you taking some rest?
This week was full of massive work session, but I'm totally healed 😇
And you, is it finally over ?
Have a good weekend @thetimetravelerz ✌️
I am getting better I am 95% there
You too have a wonderful weekend :)
Great ! Many thanks, it has been very quiet and peaceful here and we enjoyed a beautiful weather 😊
Hope yours went nicely too ✌️ !
Luckily it was a peaceful weekend here as well. Luckily a bit cool before the fierce summer kicks in
So counting my blessings and enjoying the good weather till it lasts.
Hope the climate there remains pleasant for you for a long time and hope the climate remains cool and the heat does not get too fierce in the coming months.
It is sad to see Europe experiencing such fierce summers.
Take care @anttn
Yeah, after I've no doubt we'll manage to adapt ourselves to those changes :)
I've been late to catch up, take good care as well dear @thetimetravelerz 😇✌️
