An amazing Place to observe Reptiles and other Exotic Animals in Paris

avatar

When I say exotic, it is obviously from a European point of view ! Last week, a friend of mine told me about this place he used to go to when he was still at school not far from there. It's actually a rather large shop, on two floors, which is located in the 13th arrondissement, not far from the Asian districts, and has made reptiles and amphibians its speciality.

As you can imagine, all this piqued my curiosity and I decided to go there to see this incredible collection of iguanas, chameleons, turtles, frogs and snakes.

COUV REPTILES GOOD ONE.jpg

Here is a small visual summary of some of my favourite species ! With the Pogona vitticeps in the centre, my favourite for its real scale beard.

IMG_5370.JPG

Here we are in front of the shop called 'la Ferme Tropicale' and indeed, inside there is a humid heat which contrasts quite a lot with the 2-3° outside ! Depending on the season, you have to adapt your clothes, but in any case, all the sellers were wearing T-shirts.

IMG_5368.JPG

As soon as you enter, you come across walls of vivariums and aquariums like this one. Some are full of insects and others are only displayed empty to give an idea of the volume to potential buyers.

IMG_5235.JPG

IMG_5239.JPG

IMG_5237.JPG

Towards the entrance there are a few species of stick insects, which are kings of camouflage and look like twigs, green leaves or thin pieces of bark. Here you will recognize a moult in the middle picture.

IMG_5248.JPG

IMG_5246.JPG

This is our first specimen, Laemanctus julioi, also known as the Julio's helmet iguana, is a species of lizard in the family Corytophanidae. This small iguana is endemic to Honduras.

IMG_5252.JPG

You've got a whole gang of them :)

IMG_5261.JPG

IMG_5260.jpg

Here are two views of the entrance and the way things are displayed, especially the decorations for the vivariums which I personally find quite horrible. Why put a fake stone instead of a real one ? And I don't know if I'd really want to see a human skull, even a resin one, every day in my house !

IMG_5256.JPG

IMG_5258.JPG

IMG_5259.JPG

A magnificent trio of chameleons. These animals are fascinating, we missed the tongue lashing of the first one, but not the rest of the tasting...!

IMG_5263.JPG

IMG_5264.JPG

This is a Berber toad, a species that lives in Mauritania as its name suggests.

IMG_5266.JPG

IMG_5268.JPG

IMG_5269.JPG

There are small frogs, Dendrobates auratus, which originate from Central America. These are not particularly endangered and have even been introduced to Hawaii.

IMG_5273.JPG

There are many subspecies, each with its own color. Personally, I like the blue ones the most !

IMG_5275.jpg

Here is another angle of vivarium and terrarium walls, it reminds me of the aquarium I visited earlier this month ! Attention, sensitive souls, please refrain from the image below !

IMG_5278.JPG

IMG_5280.jpg

Inevitably, living organisms mean food, and here we are dealing with frozen rodents, probably intended for snakes...

IMG_5284.JPG

IMG_5289.JPG

IMG_5290.JPG

IMG_5291.JPG

But let's go back to our tour with this incredible monitor, Varanus reisingeri*, which was obviously running around. Not easy to take a picture, at certain moments it is the tail which is clear, at other it is the head ^^ !

It's true that it's also quite sad to see animals living in spaces that seem more or less adapted to their needs... But let's not delude ourselves, the best environment for these animals is the one that is natural for them, even though the majority were born in captivity, many in Europe.

IMG_5299.JPG

IMG_5301.JPG

IMG_5296.JPG

There we find some aquatic and non-aquatic turtles. They are always intriguing animals and I like them a lot. And I heard a salesman talking to a customer, the best thing is that the animals have as much space as possible !

IMG_5305.JPG

Here, one of the famous missing reptiles, a Pterodactyl toy, quite realistic, from the same brand I had as a child... I didn't take it this time, but probably next time haha !

IMG_5312.JPG

IMG_5309.JPG

IMG_5313.JPG

This is my favorite ! The Pogona vitticeps. This lizard is particularly dynamic and several times jumps in our direction in an intimidating way. However, it actively follows us with its eyes and seems very curious !

IMG_5316.JPG

IMG_5317.JPG

Another magnificent specimen, determined to ostensibly ignore us...

IMG_5329.JPG

IMG_5330.JPG

Another gang of these Pogona of the same species even apparently with a paler, pinkish red. Indeed, the "hypo" gene means hypomelanistic and has the power to lighten the complexion of the lizard a little more. In fact, the distribution of this gene leads to a lack of melamine which will prevent the colours from developing as much as they would in the wild.

IMG_5342.JPG

IMG_5343.JPG

We are now in the snake section and we find this Boa c. imperator, which comes from Colombia. This white female is really beautiful and I think that if I were to have a snake, this one might look like that.

IMG_5340.JPG

IMG_5350.JPG

Another Python that reminds us of the scene with Dudley in the first volume of the Harry Potter saga !

IMG_5356.JPG

IMG_5358.JPG

IMG_5359.JPG

Let's finish with these colorful snakes all curled up to maximize the heat from the UV lamps. We are upstairs and it is even hotter than on the ground floor.

IMG_5362.JPG

IMG_5363.JPG

Let's finish with these sumptuous little lizards in a very saturated turquoise blue ! And finally, below, two views from the top of this shop :

IMG_5367.JPG

IMG_5364.JPG

I hope you enjoyed this rather special visit. I haven't done my research yet, but I imagine there must be other shops like this in Paris and then there should be a museum or two dedicated to these fantastic miniature dinosaurs !

Thanks for your time and reading, take good care of yourself !

See you soon,

<3

@anttn

COUV REPTILES GOOD ONE.jpg

IMG_5299.JPG

IMG_5301.JPG

IMG_5296.JPG

<3

What a cool place to go and watch reptiles. So many…
Thanks for sharing your captures @anttn 👋🏻😊
Hope you are well, haven’t been around much lately due to having no internet on the road.
Have a wonderful Friday ☀️😘

Yeah, I was really impressed by the quantity and different varieties ! I imagined a much smaller shop :)

Yeah, I’ve seen that ! Nice Scottish mountains, just finished the read of a book in which the author (Robert MacFarlane) talked about it !

Have a great weekend, I’m happy that everything seems to go well on your side 😘 Take care !

Always nice when it’s better than expected.

That’s cool you just read a book where the author talks about them. It’s truly stunning in Scotland 😎
Thank you so much @anttn 👋🏻😊 luckily it is… tomorrow if all is good and weather permitting the truck with belongings should arrive 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Have a great weekend too and take care 😘

And so ? Did the truck arrived well and in the right timing ?

Hehe, thanks you, I hope you're doing well :)

Yes, they did arrive and we got our belongings Sunday… the weather was better and they could drive up the mountain. No ice or snow this time, so they were lucky. (And we)
🚛🚛📦📦 all is here, we had a few broken things… still unpacking though… we have lots of boxes 😎

You are welcome, I am.., tired but well. Trying to catch up a bit, internet is truly bad and doesn’t help. But a solution for this remote place is on its way 🤞🏻🤞🏻 so hopefully soon it’s better and I can post more.
Have a wonderful week further @anttn 👋🏻😊 😘

Ah, so everything has arrived !
It's cool... but less so for the broken things :/ I hope they're not your favorite things 🤞 !

Yeah, I imagine Internet must be difficult to catch in those area, would a satellite solution work ?
Have a nice installation in your new home 😇 🍀 😘

Thanks so much @anttn 👋🏻😊
I can live with less, so the broken items… kitchen things, it’s ok.
Just hope my airbrush compressor will work. They kept it on its side for over a month.
I did drain the oil… but there is always some left and I hope it didn’t go into areas it should have. I had no time to test it yet or found the oil in another box to fill it. Even if you write on a box what direction it should be transported, with bright red and yellow labels too… they don’t look. It’s a shame.
Happened from Spain to Malta, and that one was broken. Let’s hope this one isn’t. As they are not cheap… the silent ones. 🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀 positive thinking…

Still struggling with the internet… we ordered Starlink, it will be our only solution. Hope it arrives soon. As that is the solution for remote areas.
Thanks a lot… trying to catch up a bit when I can. Hope to post the last 2 parts of the journey soon.

Happy weekend 😘☀️🌺

Starlink arrived in the country today, so I hope it will be delivered in the next few days.
I will do a full set up and post about it. As it is something cool to cover in a post I think. Especially as we will remain to live in remote areas. And can easily take it along then.

Can’t wait to share the last parts with you, soon… 🤞🏻🍀 thanks
The weekend was beautiful and we explored a lot. Hope yours was nice too. Have an awesome new week 👋🏻😘
Take care too.

Happy that everything is going well, the weekend was also good and we may have found our home too, but it’s still in progress and I don’t prefer to declare victory too quickly :) Nice evening and see you soon 😘 💫

Indeed it was good news. “Starlink” arrived yesterday and after the set up I am on-line again and can finally catch up wooohhhooooo 😁🎉 so happy.
The speed is better than I had expected. I will do a few speed tests until Friday and post about it then. I can tag you.

It’s stunning 🤩 it should be on your list. Our road trip was epic! And we only saw a little bit.
Oh that’s great news, good luck further with the house. I so understand what you mean 🤞🏻🤞🏻you never know what happens. Let’s wait and be happy when all is final. But I do understand the excitement too.
Hope we find this year also a cottage to renovate a bit to settle down. 😁
Looking forward to hearing and seeing more. Keep me posted 😇
Thanks a lot @anttn have a wonderful evening too, although a day later 👋🏻😊😘

Yep, happy to be able to share this all.
You know, too bad we never managed to meet up when we were in Paris… we almost did.

Thanks a lot 👋🏻😎 much appreciated.
I did post an update from part 5 of our journey today. I had no problems uploading 80 plus photos. Starlink is working so well… even with bad weather. We have since 2 days rain 🌧️ and it goes literally sideways. And I notice nothing. Even with a thunderstorm we had yesterday evening. That had lightning ⚡️ as close as 3 km.
It’s cool 😎
Talk soon…

I hope you had a good weekend and just this little message to tell you that I loved your article on Starlink, so very clear and understandable !

I've fallen off the wagon a bit with the reading of the challenge articles I organized, but I'm picking up the pace little by little haha !

It sounds so wild and unspoiled as you describe it, it makes you want to go there anyway !
I wish you a very nice week 🍀 😘

I saw you had soooo many entries. It will take some time to go through all of them and keep up on hive. I understand. I’m still behind. But that’s ok, will pick it up soon.
We are getting ready for visitors. Our first ones already, hubbies mum plus husband. They stay a few weeks. It will be fun.

It is truly stunning around here especially as we are rather remote on this side 😉 love it.
I hear the birds in the garden… now I have put up some feeders they are happy 🥰

Thank you kindly, and I wish you too a happy week, enjoy it! 😘☀️🌸
