PLANAN SPECIES (Part 1)

Greetings, everyone. Talking about the species of the plains is a very interesting process, and I would love to learn more and, of course, share all the information I gather, but even more so, show real images of some of them, whether they are mine or from friends and acquaintances. It is always more interesting to describe them with images captured by ourselves.
In this plains area, known as Mesa de Guanipa, which I will talk about later in terms of its flora, fauna, climate, relief, and other natural characteristics, there are many species that have crept into the urban area, since the rural area and the countryside are in the surrounding area, very close to the places that have been urbanized.
That is why species such as iguanas, some snakes (which I hope not to encounter), various types of birds, and rabipelaos have been found in our gardens and yards. I will talk more about the rabipelaos later because of their presence in the neighborhood where my daughter lives.
Today I want to talk to you about several species of birds that, although they do not permanently reside in urban areas, always come here, and some even have their nests in the surrounding area, and their families have already grown.
Do you remember that months ago I told you about the plains owl that had come to visit my backyard? I also saw it flying over nearby roofs when I went out for walks. Well, it wasn't just visiting; it made its home on the roof of the multi-story house next door. The top floor is a kind of terrace with a small apartment, and that's the space our friend always frequents because it's abandoned.
Because it is close to my yard, I could see it perched on my wall, but now I see it every day when I go out for a walk, and it is no longer alone. Now it has a mate, and the two of them seem to wait for me every morning at that time to greet me, and then they perch together on the wall of the apartment. They appear at dawn, between 5:30 and 6:00 in the morning.
But let's talk a little about the way of life of the barn owl. It is said to be a bird that inhabits prairies, desert areas, grasslands, agricultural areas, and if it moves to urban areas, it stays in very open places... it usually takes shelter in caves or abandoned burrows made in the ground by other animals. In a way, the roof of an empty apartment is a little removed from the other houses, considering that this is a fairly quiet neighborhood, and there are many houses standing alone due to the migratory exodus. Other birds that have built their nests on the rooftops of this urban area are pigeons. They are more accustomed to living in both urban and rural areas, and can be found in squares and anywhere else in the city. There is a fairly large family on the roof of a neighboring house, where they shelter from the sun and rain, as a strange mound of straw has formed there. They usually gather there in the afternoons and take flight at dawn in search of food.
And to close this segment on three plains birds, I present the famous Venezuelan ricebird, which many confuse with other birds such as the canary, the jay, and others. I just learned that its name was ricebird, and reviewing its history, I found that its name is due to the fact that it frequents rice fields.
I don't know if they have nested in this area, as I only see them on the ground or on power lines. This bird is migratory, meaning that it is found not only in Venezuela but also in other American regions. They take refuge in areas with dense vegetation, especially on riverbanks, and tend to feed on seeds and insects, which are easier to find in agricultural areas. Saludos a todos. Hablar sobre las especies llaneras es un proceso muy interesante, y a mí me encantaría conocer más cosas y por supuesto compartir toda la información que voy obteniendo, pero más aún, mostrar imágenes reales de algunas de ellas, bien sean mías o de amigos y conocidos. Siempre resulta más interesante describirlos con imágenes capturadas por nosotros mismos.
En esta zona llanera, conocida como Mesa de Guanipa, que más adelante les hablaré de su flora, fauna, clima, relieve, y otras características naturales, se muestran muchas especies que se han colado en la zona urbana, ya que la zona rural y el campo se encuentran en los alrededores, muy cercanos a los lugares que han sido urbanizados.
Es por eso que en nuestros jardines y patios se han encontrado especies como las iguanas, algunas culebras (que espero no tener esa experiencia), aves de diversos tipos y los rabipelaos, de quienes hablaré más adelante por su presencia en la urbanización donde vive mi hija.
Hoy quiero hablarles de varias especies de aves que aunque no albergan permanentemente en zonas urbanas, siempre llegan hasta aquí, e incluso, algunas ya tienen sus nidos en los alrededores, y su familia ya ha crecido.
¿Recuerdan que hace meses les hablé del Tecolote llanero, que había llegado de visita a mi patio? También algunas veces lo vi sobrevolando los techos cercanos cuando yo salía a caminar. Pues no llegaba de visita, sino que formó su hogar en el techo de la casa que tengo al lado, y que tiene varios pisos. El piso superior, es una especie de terraza con un apartamento pequeño, y ese espacio es el que siempre frecuenta nuestro amigo ya que está abandonado.
Por estar cerca de mi patio, pude verlo posado en mi pared, pero resulta que ahora lo veo a diario cuando salgo a caminar, y ya no está solo, ahora tiene su pareja, y los dos pareciera que me esperan todas las mañanas a esa hora, para saludarme, y luego se posan juntos en la pared del apartamento. La hora de ellos aparecer, es amaneciendo, entre las 5.30 y 6 de la mañana.
Pero hablemos un poco de la forma de vida del Tecolote. Se dice que es un ave que habita en praderas, sitios desérticos, pastizales, zonas agrícolas, y en caso de trasladarse a zonas urbanas, permanece en sitios muy abiertos… por lo general se resguarda en cuevas, o madrigueras abandonadas hechas en la tierra por otros animales. En cierto modo, el techo de un apartamento vacío, se encuentra un poco retirado de las demás casas, considerando que ésta es una urbanización bastante tranquila, y hay muchas casas solas a causa del éxodo migratorio. Otras aves que formaron sus nidos en los tejados de esta zona urbana, son las palomas. Ellas si están más acostumbradas a albergar tanto en zonas urbanas como rurales, encontrándolas en las plazas, y cualquier sitio citadino. Tristemente para muchos son consideradas como una plaga, ya que ensucian el área, los bancos de las plazas, los carros, incluso, las escaleras de los centros comerciales. Palomas - Doves // Google
Hay una familia más o menos numerosa en el tejado de una casa vecina, y allí se resguardan del sol y la lluvia, ya que extrañamente se formó un mogote de paja en ese lugar. Por lo general, allí se reúnen en las tardes, y alzan el vuelo al amanecer en la búsqueda de su alimento.
Y para cerrar este segmento de tres aves llaneras, les presento el famoso arrocero venezolano, que muchos lo confunden con otras aves como el canario, el arrendajo, y otros más. Yo recién me entero que su nombre era arrocero, y revisando su historia me encontré que su nombre se debe a que frecuenta los arrozales.
En esta zona no sé si han anidado, las veces que los veo es en el suelo, o en los cables de luz. Esta ave es migratoria, o sea, que no sólo se encuentra en Venezuela sino en otras regiones americanas. Se refugian en zonas de mucha vegetación, especialmente en las riberas de los ríos, suele alimentarse de semillas e insectos, que son más fáciles de encontrar en las zonas agrícolas.
