As every Thursday of memories, here I share my participation today, Thursday, August 14, 2025, in the TBT Contest organized by our friend José Lanz, @lanzjoseg, for the #topfamiliy community. Siempre los jueves, reviso las fotos familiares, pero hoy cambié un poco el concepto de los #tbt, y me fui a los registros digitales de fotografías universitarias. La verdad no tengo muchas porque no eran tiempos de celulares inteligentes que nos permitieran guardar tantos momentos hermosos, pero sí tengo algunos registros que tomaban otras compañeras y luego nos enviaban al resto del grupo. Es el caso de esta fotografía, que es cortesía de alguna de mis compañeras de aquellos tiempos y que sinceramente no tengo ni la más remota idea de quién la tomó, pero forma parte de mis archivos universitarios.

El lugar es en la Mesa de Guanipa, sector llanero donde vivo, y donde también se encuentran las ciudades hermanas El Tigre y El Tigrito. En esa época yo vivía en el campo petrolero San Tomé, y el sitio de la excursión era el pueblo El Aguacatal, un caserío indígena que ocupa esta zona llanera del oriente venezolano y está conformado por pocos pobladores y viviendas, mucha sabana, riachuelos que vienen a ser desembocaduras de los ríos más cercanos como el río Caris y el río Tigre, y unas inmensas flora y fauna de llanura que fue la razón por la que se escogió este lugar para la excursión.

Every Thursday, I look through family photos, but today I changed the concept of #tbt a little and went through my digital records of college photos. To be honest, I don't have many because those weren't the days of smartphones that allowed us to save so many beautiful moments, but I do have some photos that other classmates took and then sent to the rest of the group. That's the case with this photo, which was courtesy of one of my classmates from back then, and I honestly have no idea who took it, but it's part of my college archives.

The place is in Mesa de Guanipa, the plains area where I live, and where the sister cities of El Tigre and El Tigrito are also located. At that time, I lived in the San Tomé oil field, and the site of the excursion was the village of El Aguacatal, an indigenous hamlet that occupies this plains area in eastern Venezuela and is made up of a few inhabitants and houses, a lot of savannah, streams that flow into the nearest rivers such as the Caris and Tigre rivers, and an immense variety of plains flora and fauna, which was the reason this place was chosen for the excursion.

Se trataba de un proyecto de Educación Ambiental, y nuestra profesora, quien aparece en la foto con el sombrerito, nos iba señalando en el recorrido, las diferentes poblaciones de animales típicos de esta región y sus viviendas, y los tipos de vegetaciones predominantes. Esta imagen tiene sus anécdotas, ya que aunque se vea muy simple, para nosotros no resultó ser tan fácil atravesar el río sobre los tronquitos ya que no lo habíamos hecho antes, y perdíamos el equilibrio, por lo que hubo unos cuantos chapuzones inesperados, jajaja.

El trayecto más que instructivo, fue bastante divertido, al final llegamos a una casa de campo indígena más o menos grande, en medio de la sabana, arropada por árboles muy frondosos, con un corredor largo amparado por palmas y con varias hamacas guindadas, con sus paredes de bahareque típicas de ese tipo de construcción, y el riachuelo pasando por un lado de la casa. Les puedo asegurar que el sitio era divino, y la sopa que nos brindaron, aún más.

It was an environmental education project, and our teacher, who appears in the photo wearing a little hat, pointed out the different animal populations typical of this region and their habitats, as well as the predominant types of vegetation. This image has its own anecdotes, because although it looks very simple, it wasn't so easy for us to cross the river on the logs, as we had never done it before and we lost our balance, resulting in a few unexpected dips in the water, ha ha ha.

The journey was not only educational, but also quite fun. In the end, we arrived at a fairly large indigenous country house in the middle of the savannah, surrounded by lush trees, with a long corridor covered by palm trees and several hammocks hanging from it, with walls made of wattle and daub typical of this type of construction, and a stream running alongside the house. I can assure you that the place was divine, and the soup they served us was even more so.
