The river on the mountain...

The sensation of vision is arguably the most amazing. Many descriptions of the human eye have compared it to a camera, and on the surface, this comparison is accurate. a light-tight sphere with a lens system that is positioned to focus light onto the retina, a layer of the eyeball that is photosensitive. Beyond this fundamental explanation, the human visual system (HVS) is considerably more intricately designed and operated than even the most advanced cameras currently on the market. When examined, it can be observed that it has excellent control over white balance, exposure, and focussing. It also has compression capabilities, a scanning system, and the ability to react to lighting conditions that can vary by up to six orders of magnitude.

The HVS typically functions so consistently on a daily basis that its intricacy and the plethora of processes that influence how we perceive the world around us are forgotten. We detect images one to two tenths of a second after they happen thanks to the complex processing that happens within the HVS, primarily within the visual cortex. When building and operating imaging systems, such as matching the exit pupil of a pair of binoculars to that of the eye or creating a compression system that is perceptually lossless, it is beneficial to have a fundamental understanding of how the eye works.

The fibrous, vascular, and nervous tunics—three layers or tunics—that make up the eye may be considered. The outside, middle, and inner layers of the eye's wall are roughly represented by these. Sclera and cornea make up the fibrous tunic, or the eye's outer covering. The "white" of the eye is the sclera, commonly referred to as the sclerotic coat, an opaque stiff fibrous substance consisting of collagen and elastic fibres. It serves as a barrier for the back three-quarters of the eyeball and typically "yellows" with age.
