📷 Construction Work and the End of the Heat Wave

Well, it seems to be over now. The consistently high summer temperatures—steadily above 30 degrees Celsius—have apparently been a thing of the past for this year since August 17, 2026. Nevertheless, over the past few weeks, I’ve always gone on a few short bike rides here in the surrounding area in the sweltering heat as evening approached. But despite the rare rainfall—and this photo was taken in the last few days, after weeks without rain—Wertheim am Main still looks very green.

Hallo liebe Freunde,

nun ist wohl geschafft. Die beständig sehr hochsommerlichen Temperaturen mit konstant über 30 Grad Celsius gehören wohl seit dem 17. August 2026 für dieses Jahr der Vergangenheit an. Nichts desto trotz habe ich gegen Abend über die letzte Wochen hinweg immer ein paar kurze Radtouren hier im Umkreis durch die Gluthitze unternommen. Aber trotz der raren Regenfälle - und dieses Bild entstand in den letzten Tagen, nach Wochen ohne Regen - wirkt Wertheim am Main doch wirklich noch sehr grün.

We’re currently in the middle of summer vacation here, and there’s a lot of construction going on in many places, presumably because many residents are away on vacation right now. For example, the Odenwald Bridge is currently being renovated, which sometimes leads to chaotic traffic conditions. The Odenwald Bridge is the long structure that runs directly over the confluence of the Tauber river and the Main river, along the banks of the Main. I can still vaguely remember the time when this bridge didn’t exist yet. Given today’s volume of traffic, the absence of the bridge would be simply unthinkable.

Momentan haben wir hier Sommerferien, und es wird vieler Orts kräftig gebaut, davon ausgehend, daß viele Einwohner derzeit im Urlaub weilen. So wird derzeit die Odenwaldbrücke saniert, was zuweilen zu chaotischen Verkehrslagen führt. Die Odenwaldbrücke ist das lange Bauwerk, das direkt über die Mündung der Tauber in den Main am Mainufer entlang führt. Ich kann mich noch dunkel an die Zeit erinnern, als es diese Brücke noch nicht gab. Bei dem heutigen Verkehrsaufkommen wäre das Fehlen der Brücke schlichtweg undenkbar.

My rides often take me along the Tauber Bike Trail to Waldenhausen. Before you reach Waldenhausen, you pass right by the large Tauber playground. There’s a nice ford there. As you can tell from the number of bikes, I wasn’t the only one who stopped there for a quick break.

Meine Touren führen oft auf dem Tauber Radweg nach Waldenhausen. Bevor man in Waldenhause ankommt, fährt man direkt am großen Tauberspielplatz vorbei. Dort ist eine schöne Furt. Wie man anhand der Menge an Fahrrädern sieht, bin ich nicht der einzige gewesen, der dort eine kurze Pause eingelegt hat.

The road is also being repaired in Waldenhausen, a neighborhood of Wertheim. The Tauber Bridge is always beautifully decorated with flowers.

In Wertheim's Ortsteil Waldenhausen wird auch die Straße saniert. Die Tauberbrücke ist immer schön mit Blumen bepflanzt.

Vergleichen wir doch ein aktuelles Bild von Waldenhausen mit einem Bild vom April dieses Jahres. Sieht doch etwas anders aus.

From Waldenhausen, the route heads up the mountain to the scattered farmsteads between Wertheim, Waldenhausen, Reichholzheim, and Urphar. Near the Heidhof, you can practically smell the dryness.

Von Waldenhausen geht es den Berg hoch zu den Aussiedlerhöfen zwischen Wertheim, Waldenhausen, Reichholzheim und Urphar. In der Nähe des Heidhofs kann die Trockenheit förmlich riechen.

After that, we headed back down the hill to Kreuzwertheim, which lies on the Bavarian side of the Main River—across from Wertheim. From Kreuzwertheim, you have a great view of the castle and the “Spitzen Turm,” Wertheim’s two most famous landmarks. Even though it looks in the picture below as if it were about to rain, I have to say that, once again, that wasn’t the case. As is so often the case, the rain clouds gracefully passed us by.

Danach ging es den Berg wieder runter nach Kreuzwertheim, das auf der bayrischen, und somit Wertheim gegenüberliegenden Seite des Mains liegt. Von Kreuzwertheim aus hat man einen tollen Blick auf die Burg und den Spitzen Turm, den beiden bekanntesten Wahrzeichen Wertheims. Auch wenn es auf dem unteren Bild so aussieht, es hätte gleich geregnet, so muß ich sagen, daß es mal wieder nicht so war. Wie so oft sind die Regenwolken galant an uns vorbeigezogen.

Along the banks of the Main, there are plenty of lovely coves that people use for swimming in the river. Unfortunately, some people leave their trash behind there. But I’d like to write a separate post about that on Hive. I’ll leave it at that for today and hope you enjoyed this little tour.

Am Mainufer gibt es immer wieder schöne Buchten, die auch zum Baden im Fluß genutzt werden. Leider hinterlassen dort einige ihren Unrat. Aber darüber möchte ich noch einen gesonderten Beitrag auf Hive einpflegen. Für heute möchte ich es dabei belassen und hoffe, daß Euch die kleine Tour gefallen hat.
