📷 Boxtal and the Tall Stones Natural Monument

Hidden in the forest—above Boxtal—lies the “Hohe Steine” (=Tall Stones) natural monument. It’s a sight that even many locals are almost certainly unaware of. But when you’re out biking or hunting for mushrooms, you keep coming across places like this. And that’s why, for me, the question is: Why wander far away when beauty is so close at hand?

As mentioned, the “Hohe Steine” natural monument is located west of Boxtal, above the town, and is a striking group of red sandstone rocks that is said to have been formed by years of erosion. It’s a popular destination for hikers and, for my kids, a great place to play hide-and-seek._

Hallo liebe Freunde,

Verborgen im Wald liegt - oberhalb von Boxtal - das Naturdenkmal "Hohe Steine". Das ist eine Sehenswürdigkeit, von dessen Existenz ziemlich sicher auch viele Einheimische nichts wissen. Beim Biken und Pilze suchen stösst man allerdings immer wieder auf solche Orte. Und daher gilt für mich: Warum in die Ferne schweifen, wenn das Schöne doch ist so nah.

Das Naturdenkmal "Hohe Steine" liegt wie gesagt westlich oberhalb von Boxtal und ist eine markante Felsgruppe aus Buntsandstein, die durch jahrelange Erosion entstanden sein soll. Für Wanderer ist es ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel und für meine Kinder ein Ort, wo man prima Verstecken spielen kann.

I had already been to the Hohe Steine once this year, back in April. Since the trees hadn’t put out any leaves yet, we had a particularly good view of the Main Valley. In early September, I managed to convince my kids to go on a hike to this destination. As is well known, it’s not at all easy to break through the almost magical pull of tablets and the like and get the kids to take a few steps into the woods. The initial grumbling, however, died down very quickly. That’s because the trail we chose was the steepest one. There was some serious scrambling involved, but rather than leading to frustration and despair, it actually sparked their competitive spirit and ambition. After all, it was old Dad who was panting the hardest, having to haul his more than 100 kg up the mountain.

Dieses Jahr war ich im April bereits einmal an den hohen Steinen. Da die Bäume noch keine Blätter trugen, hatte man eine besonders gute Aussicht über das Maintal. Anfang September gelang es mir, meinen Nachwuchsr dazu zu bewegen, eine Wanderung an dieses Ziel zu unternehmen. Dabei ist es - wie allgemein bekannt - gar nicht so einfach, die schier magische Anziehungwirkung von Tablets und Konsorten zu durchbrechen und den Nachwuchs dazu zu bringen, mal ein paar Schritte in den Wald zu tätigen. Das anfängliche Murren verstummte allerdings sehr schnell. Denn der Weg, den wir wählten, war der steilste. Da gabe es richtig was zu kraxeln, was aber eben gerade nicht zu Frust und Verzweifelung führte, sondern vielmehr den Wettkampgeist und Ergeiz antachtelte. Denn am meisten keuchte der alte Papa, der seine mehr als 100 kg den Berg hochzuwuchten hatte.

I always enjoy biking to Boxtal, which is idyllically situated in the Wildbachtal valley. So, in a way, it’s a place of relaxation for me, too—not just one that’s officially recognized as such. Boxtal is part of Freudenberg, a neighboring town of Wertheim, and lies between these two small towns at the foot of the Schenkenwald forest.

Das idyllisch im Wildbachtal gelegene Boxtal fahre ich immer gerne mit dem Fahrrad an. Es ist also auch für mich in gewisser Weise ein Erholungsort - nicht nur ein staatlich Anerkannter. Boxtal gehört zur Wertheimer Nachbargemeinde Freudenberg und liegt zwischen diesen beiden Städtchen am Fuße des Schenkenwalds.

We started our hike to the Hohe Steine from a parking lot in front of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas. The church is a cultural landmark. However, my children are much less interested in it than they are in a natural landmark.

Unsere Wanderung zu den Hohen Steinen starteten wir von einem Parkplatz vor der römisch-katholischen Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus aus. Die Kirche ist ein Kulturdenkmal. Sie interessiert meine Kinder allerdings dann doch wesentlich weniger als ein Naturdenkmal.

The good thing about a steep hike up to your destination is that the way back is all downhill and not nearly as strenuous. Of course, we didn't choose the very steep path for the return trip; instead, we walked back through a ravine with a moderate slope.

Das gute an einem steilen Hinweg zum Ausflugsziel ist, daß der Rückweg nur bergab führt und nicht ansatzweise so anstrengend ist. Wir sind natürlich nicht den ganz steilen Weg als Rückweg gewählt, sondern sind durch eine Klinge mit moderatem Gefälle zurück gelaufen.

The Main-Tauber district is already among the leaders in Baden-Württemberg when it comes to wind power expansion; it has a particularly large number of wind turbines and thus boasts one of the highest densities of wind power in the state. Freudenberg is also home to a wind farm. Ironically, the wind turbines were positioned in such a way that they are barely visible from downtown Freudenberg. From Boxtal, on the other hand, you can enjoy them in all their glory.

Der Main-Tauberkreis liegt in Sachen Windkraftausbau in Baden-Württemberg bereits auf Spitzenplätzen, hat besonders viele Windkraftanlagen und verzeichnet somit mit die höchste Windkraftdichte im Bundesland. Freudenberg beherbergt auch einen Windpark. Die WkAs wurden dabei ironischer Weise so positioniert, daß man sie von Freudenberg Stadtmitte kaum sehen kann. Von Boxtal aus dagegen kann man sie in voller Pracht genießen.

As I mentioned earlier, my bike rides often take me to Boxtal. When I’ve gone for a ride in the Schenkenwald, I often exit the forest just above Boxtal. There’s also a nice spot to sit there, where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the village and the Main Valley. I hope you enjoyed my little excursion to this tranquil village. Wie ich bereits erwähnte, führen mich Radtouren oft nach Boxtal. Wenn ich eine Fahrt im Schenkenwald unternommen habe, verlasse ich den Wald oft oberhalb von Boxtal. Dort ist auch eine schöne Sitzgelegenheit, von der man die herrlich Aussicht über das Dorf und das Maintal genießen kann.
