Real conditions are always much more complex than laboratory conditions. Moreover, initial researches bring different data and results than the later ones. Something hood today proves to be bad tomorrow.
We didn't use mask for a long time. However, I try to make my son use it because pollution and dust worsens his allergies.
I agree to the point that it should be a personal decision and not mandatory

true, data is always changing, my approach is when it is so hard to prove something than maybe the effect is not that great in practice, I think a face mask can indeed be very helpful against dust and when you do construction work at home for example :)
Against dust, it is indeed effective. That’s my experience.
I use mask when I do dusting at my home
