The fortress city of Terezín (Miasto - twierdza Terezín)

Terezín to niewielkie miasto w Czechach, położone w północno zachodniej części tego kraju. Pod koniec XVIII wieku, za panowania Jozefa II Habsburga miejscowość została ufortyfikowana i zamieniona w twierdzę. Nigdy nie była ona oblegana i być może dzięki temu fortyfikacje oraz samo miasto zachowały się w stanie niemal idealnym do naszych czasów. Niedawno wybrałem się na wycieczkę do tego miasta i chciałbym wam przedstawić fotorelację z tego wypadu.

Terezín is a small town in the Czech Republic, located in the northwestern part of the country. At the end of the 18th century, during the reign of Josef II Habsburg, the town was fortified and turned into a fortress. The fortress was never besieged, and perhaps because of this, the fortifications and the town itself have been preserved in almost perfect condition to this day. I recently took a trip to this city and would like to give you a photo report of this outing.

Wokół umocnień poprowadzona jest ścieżka turystyczna która pozwala obejść twierdzę dookoła, jej długość to około 10km. W trakcie spaceru w wybranych punktach ustawione są tablice informacyjne opisujące dany fragment umocnień.

Around the fortifications there is a tourist path that allows you to go around the fortress all the way, its length is about 10km. During the walk, information tables describing the particular part of the fortifications are set up at selected points.

Kiedy twierdza przestała pełnić znaczenie strategiczne pod koniec XIX wieku w jej części utworzono więzienie polityczne, a podczas drugiej wojny światowej obóz koncetrancyjny. Znajdował się on w tak zwanej Twierdzy Mniejszej czyli dodatkowym forcie zbudowanym po wschodniej stronie rzeki Ohrzy, nad którą położony jest Terezín. Jego pierwotnym zadaniem była ochroną mostów na rzece a także kontrola ruchu rzecznego na Łabie, która przepływa na północ od fortu. Współcześnie w Twierdzy Mniejszej znajduje się muzeum związane z istniejącym tam obozem konentracyjnym oraz cmentarz upamiętniający jego ofiary. To jednak temat na innego posta.

When the fortress lost its strategic importance at the end of the 19th century, part of it became a political prison, and during World War II a concentration camp. The concentration camp was in the so-called Minor Fortress, an additional fort built on the eastern side of the Ohře River. Its original task was to protect bridges over the river and also to control river traffic on the Labe River, which flows north of the fort. Today in the Minor Fortress is a museum related to the concentration camp that existed there, as well as a cemetery commemorating its victims.

Miasto wewnątrz umocnień jest niewielkie. Ulice biegną na przestrzał i krzyżują się pod kątem prostym co oczywiście spowodowane jest jego militarnym charakterem. Część budynków w centrum została odnowiona, niestety wychodząc poza dość spory plac centralny nie jest już tak dobrze. Wiele budynków niszczeje a nawet popada w ruinę. Prawie wszystkie budynki w mieście pochodzą z XVIII i XIX wieku, a cały układ pozostał praktycznie niezmieniony od powstania twierdzy.

The city inside the fortifications is quite small. The streets are straight and cross at right angles which is obviously due to military nature of the town. Some of the buildings in the center have been renovated but unfortunately going beyond the quite large central square it is not so good. Many buildings are deteriorating and even falling into ruins. Almost all of the buildings in the city are from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the entire layout has remained practically unchanged since the establishment of the fortress.

Terezín położony jest nad rzeką Ohrzą, jej wody poprzez system kanałów i śluz mogły zalać twierdzę i okoliczne tereny w przypadku oblężenia.

Terezín is located by the Ohrza River, its waters through a system of canals and sluices could flood the fortress and surrounding areas in the case of a siege.
