Paço do Marquês de Ponte de Lima | Military History Interpretation - Portugal
Hello everyone :)
Today we are going to take a look at some of the interior space of the Paço do Marquês building where the Military History Interpretation Center of this beautiful town that is Ponte de Lima is housed.
This building was built in the second half of the 15th century and served as the residence of an important personality in the region, D.Leonel de Lima.

The installation of the Interpretation Center in that space resulted from a protocol signed in 2011 between the Municipality and the Portuguese Army.
There we are presented with an exhibition that allows us to understand a little more of the history of Portugal, mainly about this region of the country and to learn about some of the events, including battles that shaped the course of history, thus proving the geolocation of this village had a high importance in past events.
It is possible to see the development and improvement of the weapons used in many of these battles, as well as the clothing and military uniforms.
Some of the most important military figures in the region are also portrayed on mannequins dressed in formal dress and with the appropriate accompanying description.
The exhibition is spread over 3 floors and right at the entrance it is explained how to move along the different floors, so that it is possible to correctly follow the chronology of events.

Therefore, right after the reception, we are invited to go down directly to the basement through narrow stone stairs that lead us to a small room, where, in addition to some mannequins exposing some of the oldest uniforms, there is an enormous model protected by glass on all sides, at ground level, and where the topography of the region is represented, demonstrating a mostly mountainous terrain.
From there, the only possible way to go is to go back where we had gone down to the 1st floor, where some more uniforms and some weapons are on display, mainly swords and another model of the village.
There, what stands out the most is the archaeological moat that allows you to visualize the evolution of the construction of the building over the different centuries of history, with traces of foundations having been found that indicate that the construction of the building was carried out on top of an older construction. intended for defensive purposes.
The Roman occupation turns out to be present throughout history that is told in all the posters that are posted along the 3 floors.

From there, we go back through the reception and go up to the second floor where it is already possible to see the evolution of both weapons and uniforms.
Huge and heavy swords give way to shotguns.
The interior spaces of the building are very well preserved and conserved, turning out to be interesting this contrast between the modern and the old.
Finally, before going up to the third floor, we pass through a small living room where they invite us to leave a message in a huge one, as a reminder that we were there and to come back later and remember :)
On the third floor we have the description of a few more events from a different era from the previous ones, as well as examples of the utensils used.

To end the visit and return to the starting point, we open a door that gives direct access to the terrace from where it is possible to see practically the entire village and at the opposite end we find another door that gives direct access to the entrance of the building through the staircase.

The duration of the visit is at the discretion of each one as we are not accompanied by a guide and there is no schedule to make the route.
In fact, we could even have visited all the floors at random.
