Óbidos Village - Queens Village | Portugal (Aerial Views)
Hi all :)
Welcome to Óbidos!
This is the most romantic medieval village in our country. Every stone on the castle wall, every façade around the corner seems to have been frozen in time, which makes you wonder what it would be like to live there a long time ago.

The story tells that this small village was successively offered over time by various kings to their queens, but it was when King D. Dinis offered it to Queen Santa Isabel that the village began to have all the general attention and that it still does today, making it one of the best preserved village in our country.
For this same reason and many others, in 2017 it was considered one of the 7 wonders of Portugal.
I hope to be able to convey here what we felt when we were there.
On the way, still in the distance and walking along the highway, it is already possible to see the wall that surrounds the whole village, all of it imposing and of course, like many other walls built all over the country, with the purpose of protecting the small village that settled there.

Once there, we parked the car in a small park near the entrance to the wall, right in the middle of the various busloads of tourists that kept arriving.
The entire visit is done on foot and as soon as we arrive at the entrance, we cross an arch that passes under the wall where a young man was singing and playing the guitar. The acoustics are spectacular and we stayed there for a while to enjoy what that moment had to offer, while we appreciated the phenomenal painting done on the tiles that decorate the walls of that small dome and which i came to know through some research, to be the representation of some scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The village was full of people, mostly tourists with their cameras and their bags full of souvenirs that we can find scattered around the different little shops that accompany us along the narrow streets, in the middle of a modest crowd that goes through all the little houses of commerce and the famous ginginha stalls that are one after the other such is the demand.
It was at these stalls, installed at the door of the different shops, that we ended up making several stops to taste the famous Ginga de Óbidos, without forgetting the small glass of chocolate that is eaten together with the drink, and i can already say that the combination is something worthy of tasting, so here's the tip, even if it's not in Óbidos, try it, Ginga served in a chocolate cup ;)
There are several qualities, served in different glasses, and the ideal is to try one at a time.

The smell in the air is indescribable and it was funny to realize that many of the houses are inhabited and there aren't just commercial places. Honestly, it must be complicated trying to get home after a day at work, or simply trying to come to the grocery store and always having a flood at our doorstep, because as they say, despite the main dates on which the best-known events in the village, Óbidos ends up being visited throughout the year by lots of people coming from all over.

Of course, it is a joy to always have the streets full, but the calm at the end of the day allows you to see the place in a more special and silent way, which was not our case, since from the time we arrived until we left, even after a long despite the fact that shops were already closed, the streets were still full of people.
The smell of bread in the wood oven appears from time to time, opening the appetite not only for the little ones but also for the older ones :)
Even so, we continued a little longer before stopping to enjoy this delicacy.

We went up and down between the houses and side streets and found a small square where people gathered to take pictures and socialize right in front of the most important religious temple in the village, Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria, a place of worship for several generations, through which several creeds and different religions passed.
Taking advantage of the religious theme, nearby, also because the village is tiny, in a small square stands another church, the Igreja de S.Pedro, also with an interesting architecture.
Just the walk, the environment and what we can see and taste is enough to visit Óbidos, but if you decide to visit on one of these dates, you will still have the opportunity to attend one of these cultural events:
To end or start the year on a high note, between November and January you can visit Vila de Natal, in April the famous International Chocolate Festival, between July and August the bombastic Medieval Fair, between September and October the FOLIO – International Literary Festival of Óbidos and also Seasons of Baroque Classical Music, Harpsichord and the Opera Festival, that is, there is no shortage of things to do in Óbidos and certainly anyone who visits this place will return with very good memories.
And now, let me share some more photos from this magical spot, included the aerial views ;) Here we go
