Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.11.23 /
It is the coldest day of the season with temperatures falling below zero, yet the sky was beautifully clear, so I even went for a morning walk. My daughter caught a cold again, and with a mid-week holiday, I didn't visit the garden. Still, I’ve been slowly adjusting to the cold season and spending time on the balcony now and then, enjoying the bright winter sky.
Micro Balcony and Indoor Update
The leaves on the branch holding the yuzu fruit had started to pale and looked tired, so I harvested the fruit. When the tree arrived last year, it already had three fruits on it, so I had assumed it would rest this year. I’m really happy it made it all the way to harvest. I’m planning to bake a yuzu pound cake so the whole family can enjoy it.

Next year, I want to water it more carefully during summer and hopefully harvest three fruits or so. But first, I’ll let the tree rest well. Last year it stayed outside all winter, so this year I’m planning to leave it outside again and observe how it does.
Speaking of citrus, the lemon tree I brought indoors is trying to bloom ... it mistook it’s spring. I worried that it uses too much energy and wondered whether I should remove the buds, but after looking it up, it seems they will drop naturally. My daughter insisted that we shouldn’t pluck the flowers, and I also wanted to leave them, so we were happy to know that the flowers can stay.

Next to the lemon tree, the chrysanthemum greens (Shungiku) I’m growing indoors under a light for a month are slowly coming along. Interestingly, the plants in the deeper pots are doing better. ChatGPT once told me that shungiku doesn’t need deep soil and that a shallow pot is enough—what a lie! I’m glad I compared them myself ☺️ I’m already looking forward to cooking shungiku with tofu and shiitake mushrooms simmered in a sweet-soy broth… can’t wait.

Speaking of indoor growing, I also started my annual hyacinth hydroponics. You can grow them using special hyacinth vases like this, but you can also place stones in a jar and let the bulb just barely touch the water. It’s an easy way to enjoy growing something indoors, and I recommend it to anyone curious.

The “Klein” but Big Garden
I couldn’t visit the garden at all this week. It doesn’t look like next week will be very warm either, but the week after that seems promising, so I’ll go when it feels right without pushing myself. I bought some anemone bulbs on sale (again!), and I want to plant them soon 😊
To-Do for Next Week
There aren’t any major tasks, but while writing this post, I realized I’d like to continue comparing the growth habits of indoor Shungiku. I’ll harvest the ones in the shallow pot and sow new seeds in a pot with even deeper soil. Experiments like these are so much fun.
To everyone in the Northern Hemisphere, enjoy your cozy downtime — and to those in the Southern Hemisphere, enjoy the sunshine. Happy gardening, and have a lovely Sunday!

"Klein"
Hope the weather becomes kinder soon so you can enjoy more time in your garden. Your balcony plants look so clean and well kept you really have a beautiful way of growing and arranging them.
5 degrees warmer would be nice ☺️ There are less going on on my balcony but still the evergreens are welcoming when I go out.
For gardeners, winter can be a real disappointment because so many things slow down or come to a temporary halt. Sometimes that's what makes me so happy to live in a country with two seasons. It's like being able to harvest a plentiful harvest of vegetables and fruit because it's summer, but also being afraid of lightning striking your trees because it's raining all month long. :D
I must say winter isn't too bad. It make me slow down to plan the next year 😉
Hope the weather in your area will be better soon. Such a creative and productive gardening style. Love it! Bountiful harvest ahead of you! 🥰
One more month and days get longer. Nice slow days just a bit sunshine is missing ... ☺️
