Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.11.12 /
I finally recovered from my cold, and since the past few days have been warm, I visited my garden for the first time in a while. It’s so easy to forget, but health really is something to be grateful for. I was also reminded how comforting it feels to spend time in the silent garden just with plants.
Micro Balcony Update

I watered the balcony plants after a while. Along the way, I reorganized the pots and composted the plants that had withered. But honestly, there’s not much to do in autumn and winter — it’s a resting season for me, the soil, and the plants, to prepare for next year.
The yuzu tree, which tolerates the cold well, is almost ready for harvest. I remember when it arrived last year when I felt quite down after losing my office space and failing to secure a new one, and this little tree really lifted my mood.

Speaking of citrus, my kumquat has a few tiny fruits on it. I’m not sure if they’ll grow bigger, but I’ll just watch and enjoy the process without putting too much pressure on it. My dream is to have a fruiting kumquat tree by the entrance — like the one at a house I once stayed at in Japan — so my family can pluck a fruit or two on our way out the door ☺️

By the way, the shungiku (chrysanthemum greens) I’m growing indoors are slowly getting bigger, and since they’re growing straight toward the light above them not to the window direction to catch sunshine, I guess the grow light is doing its job. I’m already looking forward to making miso soup with shungiku and tofu on a cold winter day.
Next to them is my lemon tree, which doesn’t handle the cold well — it’s been moved to its usual winter spot. The “spot” is actually the corner of the bedroom ... we must be creative to live with a lot of plants. Luckily my family is tolerant 😉

The “Klein” but Big Garden
I went to the garden to check how things were doing and to plant some bulbs. It was calm and quiet — everything seemed to have been carrying on in its own slow rhythm. The trees had already dropped their leaves and looked neat and refreshed.

Today I planted about 80 bulbs of tulips, alliums, daffodils, and irises where the summer vegetables used to be. There’s still room for another 50–60 bulbs, so I’ll probably buy more — including some for the balcony ☺️

I can already imagine next spring — flowers blooming from the bulbs, planting broad bean seedlings in March, and once the frost risk passes in mid-May, summer vegetables come in between the flowers. I’m really looking forward to the next gardening season (as always)!
To-Do for Next Week
According to the forecast, next week will be quite cold — the highest temperatures only around 5°C. I won’t push myself, but if there’s a sunny day, I’d love to go to garden and plant the second batch of bulbs.
I’ve also been thinking about pruning the garden trees myself once the power is back next spring. Maybe I’ll start looking for a good pair of long-handled pruning shears or a small electric saw. Maybe I’ll find a good deal on upcoming Black Friday / Cyber Monday!
That's it! It was my pleasure to post garden journal. Wishing everyone a nice week.

"Klein"

Happy Gardening!
It's been a while since I've seen the progress of your micro-garden. As you might expect, there are many changes with the shift to winter, but you still have some fruit to show us. This is the first I've heard about the yuzu tree; I didn't know there was such a small variety of lemon. Does it taste as sour as a regular lemon? As for your large garden, it's going to be wonderful when all those bulbs bloom in the spring. I can't wait to see those flowers! Take care not to catch another cold. I'm glad you're feeling better now.

Yuzu is a citrus variety popular in Asia. It's quite cold tolerant so I thought about give it a try in Germany :) It's not so sour rather mild it has unique fine flavor. I bought some more packs of bulbs today to fill the empty spaces ...
You too be careful to the cold!
I'm glad you recovered and were able to go to your garden. The plants look very pretty. I didn't know about yuzu, and it's a citrus fruit. Is its fruit very sour?
How wonderful that you have a large garden where you can grow tulips and other plants.
I love gardening, and I loved reading your post, plus I learned about a plant I didn't know about.
Greetings @akipponn
Thanks @popurri! It was really after a while I had a cold ;)
It's interesting Yuzu is not well known also as @palomap3 wrote. For me grew up in Asia it's one of the common citrus. It tastes rather mild. I wish you have a chance to try it! I saw Yuzu taste macarons in France so I guess it's getting popular ☺️
I don't know if it is grown in Venezuela, where I live, but I would love to try it. I hope I get the chance.
Thank you.
