Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.11.02 /

It’s already November! After returning from Malaysia, where Hive Fest took place, I thought I’d take a little time to readjust — but between catching up on things and caring for my daughter, I ended up catching her cold. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had one! So gardening has been on pause for now. This was actually my first week not visiting the garden except when I'm traveling.

Micro Balcony Update

Even though I said I took a break, I still harvested some ginger and tidied up the balcony. I really do love gardening after all 😂

The reason I grow ginger — something you can easily buy at shops — is to make ginger bug. I participated in Terra Madre Americas, a Slow Food event in the U.S., as a member of the Slow Drinks group. Our mentor, Danny Childs, introduced ginger bug in his book "Slow Drinks", and I decided to start cultivating one myself. But even organic store-bought ginger didn’t work well — perhaps it was sterilized? So I decided to grow my own. Every day, I grate a bit of ginger and feed the bug with sugar.

While there isn’t much harvest at this time of year, I still get some strawberries, and the lettuces are holding on. Having a few lettuce plants around is very convenient — whenever you want “a little green for your sandwich,” you can just pick a few leaves. Around March next year, seedlings will start appearing, so why not try planting about six? For just around 2 euros, you can enjoy a very satisfying result!

In Malaysia, I saw hydroponic systems — in hotels, at the Hive Fest conference venue REXKL, and more. It made me want to try growing Shungiku (chrysanthemum greens) indoors under LED lights. It's tasty in this season but it's too cold and dark to grow in my region. In Germany, organic soil-based growing is still considered the best, but in hotter countries, outdoor cultivation is challenging, so hydroponics is often presented as a positive, forward-looking solution. I’m still hesitant about using liquid fertilizers, so I’ll experiment with soil-based indoor growing methods for now.

On the flight back from Malaysia, I got a clear view of Abu Dhabi from above. I wondered how agriculture works in a desert country and asked ChatGPT about it — turns out much of the food is imported, but indoor farming is being explored. Thinking about agriculture in such harsh environments, I realized it’s a bit premature to dismiss hydroponic or indoor cultivation altogether.

Speaking of low-impact indoor growing, I’ve also started sprouting microgreens again in my kitchen. During the cold autumn and winter months, I don’t eat salads as much — they feel too cooling — but sprinkling some microgreens on top of dishes adds a nice touch of freshness without feeling too cold.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

I didn’t visit the garden this week, but next week, when the weather is nice, I’d like to plant some bulbs for next spring. If the compost is ready, I’ll spread it over the growing area as a little thank-you for this year’s harvest.

To-Do for Next Week

First of all, I need to recover from the cold and regain my energy. Then, on sunny days, I’ll start preparing the balcony and garden bit by bit for next year.

Take care everyone, stay warm, and happy gardening!

"Klein"

Happy Gardening!

That daily ginger grating to keep your bug happy really stood out, like a tiny fermentation pet that pays you back on cold days :) I had the same issue with store ginger feeling a bit lifeless, so growing your own to seed the culture sounds defintely worth the time. Also loved the simple math of a few lettuce starts giving fresh leaves for months, thats the kind of small habit that adds up. Microgreens sprinkled on hot food while sitting on the kitchen ch;air sounds perfect for this season.

Growing ginger is surprisingly easy. You just find sprouting ones in early summer and put it in soil. Then they are! Other lettuce & microgreens are simple too. We can grow food much more easier than we think. Of course some difficult ones are there though ;)

Love that approach. If I tuck a sprouting knob in a pot now, how long it take to pull a decent harvest on a small balcony? My spot gets morning light then shade, will ginger still grow okay, or better to keep in a warmer corner? For lettcue, I plan to sow a few every two weeks and keep teh tray of microgreens, cheap and cheerful :) Also curious if shungiku does fine in soil indoors without any liquid ferts.

I think it is quite dependent to the climate of where you live. In my place, eastern part of Germany, it's too cold now. So I will plant mine next May and harvest around this season of the year. What I do is to find someone in the same zone and follow on YouTube :)

I'm still trying to work out if it's worth growing ginger. From all the videos I've seen, people plant a big chunk in and seem to harvest more or less the same size at the end of the video. That doesn't seem to make sense to me

That's right 😂 Mine aren't large but I guess it's because I did it in July, which was a bit too late. I'm happy to compare the size and weight next year. If they grow large enough it's worth to have some in garden. Almost nothing to do except for planting and harvesting 🫚

That's a great plan.Planting some bulbs is a perfect activity during spring time. But this moment just recharge yourself and relax to prepare for the next planting season.

Both true. I do planting slowly. Still some more time :) It's a kind of zero loss investment.
