Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.10.26 /
I joined @HiveFest in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and came back to Germany this week. My garden friend took care of both my plants at home and the garden while I was away, so I could travel with peace of mind.
At the Hive Fest, I put some @gardenhive stickers in the goodie bags. I hope new people will come to Hive and Hive Garden ☺️

Micro Balcony Update
My balcony is slowing down as we move into autumn, though it still looks surprisingly green. The savoy cabbage I bought on sale at an organic shop near the end of spring is growing very well. I harvest the outer leaves instead of letting it form a head, and I enjoy using them in soups and quiches.

I tried to grow a ginger bug this summer, but even with organic ginger it didn’t go well. Maybe the ginger had been sanitized too much? So I decided to grow my own fresh ginger. Once it sprouts, it is incredibly easy to grow by just planting it in soil. I might grow it in the garden next year.

The yuzu tree is growing well for winter harvest. It must take so much energy for a young tree to bear fruit, because only the branches with fruit have yellowing leaves. I am cheering it on every day. It came to our home around this time last year, and has never been taken indoors. It’s thriving and producing fruit even in this colder region, so I definitely recommend yuzu for anyone who wants to try citrus in a cooler climate.

Speaking of fruit, some of them are still producing. We have harvested 84 strawberries so far. We might reach 100 by the end of the year 🍓

The “Klein” but Big Garden
I visited my garden on bike. The annual spring / summer plants have withered and the garden looks fully autumnal now. I was hoping to ask a tree maintainer to prune the branches that I cannot reach, but the electricity to the garden is turned off in winter, so I might have to postpone that. I plan to trim the reachable parts by myself with a long-handled pruner.

A tiny reminder of summer remained there. A baby zucchini that helped as extra weight for cardboard mulch this year and supported weed control.

This year, Shiso (Perilla) didn't grow at the farm I worked with to produce syrup, so I started raising seedlings in late June and planted them in the garden. It was a bit late, and I only harvested under 200g. So commercial production is on pause this year. I want to try a rose-infused version that I’ve always been curious about, and put it in small bottles to share with family and friends.

The autumn–winter leafy greens I planted before leaving for Malaysia were eaten a lot by birds, so I covered them with fleece for both protection and insulation. I really want to enjoy mizuna and shungiku nabe this winter! 😁 I’ll bring some sunflower seeds soon, so the birds can snack on other things instead.

I also bought lots of bulbs for next spring: iris, tulips, daffodils, and alliums. It's an investment for the spring.

To-Do for Next Week
Since the weather looks nice next weekend, I plan to take my daughter to the garden to plant the bulbs together.
Now that the summer plants are gone and the leaves have fallen, the whole garden layout is visible again. Based on what I learned about its characteristics during the spring and summer season, I’ll start planning next year’s crops and gradually adjust the growing spaces and prune tree branches at a slow pace.
Happy Gardening and have a nice Sunday everyone!

"Klein"

Happy Gardening!
It’s amazing how much care and thought you put into both your micro and larger gardens. From nurturing your yuzu tree in the cool climate to planning next year’s blooms with your daughter. I am amazed as to how you balance creativity, patience, and learning in your gardening journey. Wishing you more fruitful harvests and peaceful garden days ahead!
Thanks! It's just fun to be with plants. Now I'm slowing down for next year ☺️
Oh wow, you're already so busy with your garden. My balcony is pretty much unkept this time haha and this made me realized that some of my plants withered. Hopefully you'll have plentiful harvest. You're my inspiration to keep a balcony garden 😊
It's difficult for the warmer climate. My yuzu tree dropped two fruits and some other plants withered in June while I was away for two weeks and I relied on my family ... 😅 But it's nice you can enjoy gardening whole the year, which I envy and seriously thinking about moving to a bit south 😁
Its nice that your friend helped care for your plants while you were away. I love ow your balcony looks green even in autumn. Gardening brings joy all year around. 💚
