Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.09.14 /

Is it already autumn in Germany! The temperature makes it feel that way — in the coming ten days there won’t be a single day above 25°C. I find myself missing summer a little, but at the same time I try to enjoy the climate as it is each year.

Micro Balcony Update

On the balcony, I’m growing a small chili called Bonsai Chili and harvested the first batch. There are still a few plants with fruits left, so it looks like I’ll have enough chilies to spice up my food until next summer 😊 I’m happy to have taken one more step toward self-sustainability.

There haven’t been any major changes on the balcony, but the number of strawberries harvested there has exceeded 70 🙌 Right now autumn strawberries are ripening, and if things go well, I might even reach 100!

Since it feels like summer has already gone, next week I plan to start sowing lamb’s lettuce and other autumn–winter crops a little earlier than usual.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

Yesterday was the community workday in the garden. Around 15 participants gathered to collect fallen leaves and prune branches from overgrown trees in the shared areas.

On community workdays, the shared compost is open, so with my family’s help I brought over big branches left by a previous tenant as well as rose canes I had cut back with a friend who rents the neighboring plot. My garden feels much tidied up now! … But I forgot to take photos 😅 I’ll be going again next week to clean the shed, so I’ll try to take some pictures then.

We also harvested mini cucumbers, tomatoes, and more together with my daughter. She absolutely love cucumbers, so we’re planning a trip soon to a nearby town Bauzen in the same state that’s famous for its cucumber pickles.

The garden will have water and electricity until October, and I’d like to repair the shed roof before then if possible — but how best to do it? I think I’ll ask the Hive Blog DIY community for advice. Thanks to cleaning up every time I visit, the number of spiders seems to be settling down… maybe 😉

To-Do for Next Week

Next weekend is the biannual plant market at the botanical garden. The autumn edition mainly features fruit trees and perennials, and I’m hoping to buy a Damascus rose seedling if I can find one. Fingers crossed!

On the balcony, I’ll move berry plants and others that can go into the garden, clear out the tired summer vegetables, tidy up the space, and start sowing autumn–winter crops like lamb’s lettuce. This year I plan to plant most bulbs in the garden and keep the balcony plantings minimal.

In the garden, now that I’ve composted the branches and cleared things out, I’ll start planning how to expand the growing area and gradually work on it. The shed also needs a thorough cleaning.

August was slow and relaxed, but September is turning out to be surprisingly full of tasks. At the end of the month, I’ll be heading to the U.S. to attend Slow Food’s Terra Madre Americas, where I hope to get new gardening inspiration as well.

Happy gardening and have a nice Sunday everyone!

One more! I forgot to write my Oyster leaves make flowers. I may be able to harvest own seeds for next year 🦪 (As a vegetarian Oyster lover, it's my dream plant 😁 The leaves tastes like raw oyster! I think it's also good for budget ... 💵)

"Klein"

Happy Gardening!

More than 70 strawberries is already such a big success and reaching 100 would be amazing. It’s great that you have community workdays where everyone can help keep the garden clean and also make compost together that really builds a nice spirit among neighbors. Repairing the shed roof is a good plan and I agree, asking the DIY community is a great idea you’ll surely get helpful tips. Happy sunday...

Could be more for large gardens but it's a great number for my micro balcony ☺️ I enjoy workdays as I can join it with my friend and we don't feel like it is work. I'm sure I get great advices for the roof at the DIY community. Hive 💪

I still have some strawberries on my plants, too! I'm not sure they'll ripen. Chilli plants are always so pretty. I collected some for the seeds last year, but I didn't grow any this year, perhaps next year 😍.

Yeah, so my strawberries have friends in England 😁 I think they'll ripe. Mine was ripening until December last year. I can recommend mini chili varieties to anyone who loves chili. It only needs a pot, fruit full, less worry for insects etc. I definitely grow it next year again or try to over winter some plants to kick start 🌶️

I'm feeling sad that the summer season is over too - less Hive Garden posts! Sounds like a really good year. I love how active you are in the community garden as well. Compost, compost, compost for all! Love it. And I share your daughter's love of cucumbers... looking forward to planting some soon.
