Summer is back in my place in east part of Germany 🥳 The temperature climbs to around 30°C, but with less humidity and clear, crisp skies, it feels wonderful.


Micro Balcony Update

Tomatoes and strawberries keep coming in small daily harvests. However, after cooler days, the leaves of both tomatoes and okra have turned a paler color and look less vigorous ... I’m hoping they’ll perk up now that the warmth is back.

For autumn and winter, I’d like to have some Japanese leafy greens, so I sowed an Asian salad mix containing mizuna and red mustard, as well as shungiku (edible chrysanthemum). If I sow them directly in the garden, they’ll likely be eaten by pests, so I decided to raise the seedlings in tray on the balcony first before transplanting them.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

After returning from a trip, I hopped on my bike early yesterday morning to check on the garden. Waiting there for me was the long-awaited yellow zucchini 🙌 I also had the first harvest of beefsteak tomatoes and green beans. I picked green zucchini and apples too. How nice to see the harvest ☺️

As always, the blackberries were plentiful. I lost myself in thought while picking berries, and there are still plenty left—so I’ll likely be heading to the garden with a container for some time to come.

On the way home, I bought vanilla ice cream, baked a cake with the apples I’d just harvested. I squeezed in 6-7 apples as I like baked ones. We enjoyed it in the coffee time.

My daughter seems to love baked apples too and she just picked out and ate quite a lot of apples on the cake, leaving a naked cake sitting in the kitchen 😅


To-Do for Next Week

Next week, I’m planning to take part in a cooking event in the neighboring town, so I’m not sure how much gardening I’ll get done. But I’d like to take the car with a vacuum to the garden at least once and start cleaning the shed. I recently found that the shed is in its 50s, which means older than me! Somehow I feel like I can’t just leave it be. I’d like to give it some care.

Since hot days are expected to continue, I slowly work on cleaning the shed, and enjoy the harvests.

私が住んでいるドイツ東部にも夏が戻ってきました。30度くらいまで気温は上がるものの、湿度がなく、スカッと晴れて気持ちいいです。

日々ころころとトマトといちごがとれています。ただ、涼しい日が続いて、トマトとオクラの葉っぱの色が薄くなって元気がなく、ちょっと心配です。暑さが戻って元気になってくれるといいな。

秋冬に日本の葉物があるといいなと思い、水菜や赤リアスからし菜の入ったアジアサラダミックス、春菊の種をまきました。庭に直播きすると虫に食べられてしまいそうで心配なので、バルコニーで育苗して定植することにしました。

旅行から戻って、昨日は朝早く自転車に乗って庭の様子を見に行ってきました。庭では念願の黄色いズッキーニが待っていてくれました。そのほか牛の心臓トマトといんげんも初収穫。定番のブラックベリーと緑のズッキーニ、りんごもとれました。うれしいです。

毎度のことながらブラックベリーはとり放題で、考え事をしながら無心にベリー摘みに励みました。まだまだあるのでしばらくタッパーを持って庭に通う日々は続きそうです。

家に戻る途中でバニラアイスを買って、今日収穫したりんごでケーキを焼いて、おやつに食べました。おいしい!子供も焼いたりんごを好きなようで、りんごだけとって食べていってしまい、はげたケーキが台所に鎮座しています😅


来週のTODO

来週は隣町の料理のイベントに参加する予定があり、どこまで庭仕事をできるかわからないのですが、一度車で掃除機を持って庭に行って小屋の掃除を始めたいなと思っています。私よりもお姉さんの50代の小屋と知って、なんとも他人とは思えず、きれいにしてあげたいなと思っています。

暑い日が続きそうなので、体調管理を最優先にして、こやの掃除をゆっくりしつつ、収穫を楽しもうと思います。

One of my favourite puddings is baked apples:

  • remove the core from the apple.
  • place on baking parchment in baking tin.
  • fill the core with demerara sugar.
  • place a knob of butter on top of the sugar.
  • if you like, stick a few cloves around the top of the apple.
  • bake in a moderate oven (180 degrees celsius) until the apple is soft.

The sugar and butter melt and combine with the juice from the apple to make a delicious sticky toffee sauce. My favourite accompaniment is thin cream, but it might be nice with greek yoghurt, too. (Remove the cloves) 😂

There are all sorts of variations including adding sultanas and spices or using mincemeat, but this is the original that I grew up with and my favourite by far.

Ah it sounds so tasty! You are the England pudding queen 😁 Greek yogurt is a good and healthier idea than vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. So many tasty dishes to try! I need 300 years of life with 5 stomachs ...

You have so many fruits and vegetables. I think the apple cake with coffee is a perfect match.
