Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025.07.27 / 大小庭の記録

This weekend I have a two-day market event, so I was off a bit in the garden. Still, I visited the garden once between preparations, and while taking breaks on the balcony, I kept mulling over ways to connect plants with my work.

Micro Balcony Update

The balcony is in full summer mode, with tomatoes ripening daily. According to my calendar notes, I’ve harvested 9 so far, and as for strawberries — 42! Things are going well.

The chili peppers I sow as one of the first summer crops are also beginning to bear fruit. On the balcony, I’m growing a variety called "Bonsai Chili," which stands tall and elegant while being practical as I use the small spicy chili, and another called "Lila Luzi", a delightfully named plant that produces small, colorful peppers.

I’ve heard chili plants can overwinter like trees, and my Lila Luzi, now in its second year, has survived one winter already. I’m hoping to keep the Bonsai Chili through winter too.

While enjoying coffee on the balcony, I noticed the oyster leaf had grown wild and bushy. Since I was going to sell at a vegan market this weekend, I thought fellow vegetarians and vegans who miss oysters might appreciate it! I also picked some sansho, shiso, and sea fennel from the balcony and offered them donation based at the vegan market.

I let myself dream a little: what if I became a rare plant grower and food creator? The perfect job! …Though no one actually bought any 💦 Still, a few people showed interest, and as always, talking about plants was a lot of fun.

As the crowd thinned out and I got into a playful mood, I tried wrapping oyster leaf with rice and nori, then added a splash of soy sauce… and it was delicious! That discovery alone made it worth bringing plants to the market — I’ll count that as a win 😉

The “Klein” but Big Garden

I headed out to the garden hoping to see a pile of zucchini harvest, but ended up with zero 😅 The yellow ones especially seem to be falling off before they mature. I’d like to find out why and help them along (because I really want to eat them!).

Another nice thing was seeing the beans climbing the tipi (a tent-like structure I made a few weeks ago). Although the leaves have been nibbled quite a bit, the upper parts are intact. I hope they continue to grow strong.

The tomatoes in the garden are starting to color too… purple!? I’m excited to see what kind of tomatoes they’ll turn out to be.

I’m already looking forward to checking on the garden early tomorrow morning.

To-Do for Next Week

The rain has taken care of most of the watering task, and I’ve almost finished sowing seeds for fall and winter crops, so there are no big to-dos right now.

I’ll enjoy whatever I harvest, and if time allows, I’d like to work on expanding the planting area and start cleaning and renovating the shed once electricity is connected.

今週は土曜・日曜2日間のマーケットの予定があり、庭は若干サボり気味でした。とはいえ準備の合間に庭を見に行ったり、バルコニーで一服している中で植物を仕事につなげるアイディアをもんもんを考えたり、やっぱり植物と庭は私にとってなくてはないもので、好きなんでしょうね。三つ子の魂百まで！

バルコニーは夏真っ盛りという感じで、日々トマトがころころととれています。カレンダーの記録によると、今のところ9個とれて、いちごにいたっては42個。いい調子です。

夏野菜のトップバッターとして種をまく唐辛子にも実がついてきました。バルコニーでは立ち姿が美しくて実用的でもある「盆栽チリ」という品種と、カラフルな小ぶりの唐辛子がなるLila Luziという楽しい名前の唐辛子を育てています。

唐辛子は木のように越冬できると聞いて、越冬に成功したLila Luziは2年目です。盆栽チリもうまく越冬させたいな。

バルコニーでコーヒーを飲んでいる時に、わさわさになったオイスターリーフが目に止まり、週末に出店するのはヴィーガンマーケットで、私みたいにオイスターが恋しいベジタリアン・ヴィーガンの人に喜んでもらえるのでは！？と山椒や紫蘇、海のフェンネル持つんで一緒にマーケットに持っていってみました。

レアな植物の栽培者兼フードクリエイターってドリームジョブ！と妄想を膨らませていましたが、持っていってくれる人はゼロ・・・💦 でも興味を持ってくれた人はいて、植物の話をするのは毎度のことながら楽しかったです。

マーケットのお客さんが減って、遊びたい気持ちになって、オイスターリーフをご飯と一緒に海苔で巻いて醤油をたらして食べたらおいしかったです。こんな発見もあったので、マーケットに植物を持っていくことにトライした自分を褒めることにしましょう 😉

"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子

そろそろズッキーニが山盛りできているのでは・・・と期待に胸を膨らませて一度庭を見に行ったのですが、収穫はゼロ。黄色いズッキーニはどうやら実が落ちてしまっているようなんですよね。原因を解明して、無理のない範囲でズッキーニをサポートしてあげたいと思っています（食べたいし😄）。

ズッキーニのかわりではありませんが、庭ではプラムが採れてケーキを焼きました。詳しくは今週のGarden to Tableの投稿をどうぞ！

Garden to Table #03 German Plum / 庭から食卓へ #03 西洋プラム

プラムの収穫と合わせてうれしかったのが、数週間前に作ったTipi（テントの支柱のような構造物）を豆がのぼってきてくれていました。かなり葉っぱが食べられていますが、上の方は無事で、なんとかこのまま成長してほしいです。モロッコインゲンのような大好きな夏の大きなお豆さんなのです。

庭のトマトも色づき始めていて・・・紫！？どんなトマトになるのか楽しみです。

今日マーケットを終えて、明日の早朝に庭の様子を見に行くのが今から楽しみです。

来週のTODO

水やりは雨がやってくれているし、秋冬の苗の種も一通り巻き終えたしで、大きなTODOはありません。

収穫した野菜を楽しみつつ、庭の栽培スペースの拡張計画と、小屋に電気が通ったら小屋の掃除と改装を進められたらいいなと思っています。
