How many weeks has it been since I last wrote a Garden Journal slowly on a Sunday like today ...
June flew by with the Gothic Festival and the Maker Residency. Summer is in full swing here in Germany, and the warm-season plants are thriving. Every time I step out onto the balcony, I still feel a little "yuzu loss," but I'm slowly recovering.
Micro Balcony Update
Under the strong summer sun, our tomatoes have started to bear fruit. It’s earlier than usual, with some already beginning to show a blush of color. It looks like we’ll be able to eat tomatoes in July this year, which is exciting. I planted five varieties of balcony tomatoes, hoping my daughter would enjoy them too.
Our oldest Hive Fig is now practically a small tree. I’m so relieved it survived my time away even some were lost 🥺 I now have four larger fig plants that I want to continue nurturing. Hopefully, they’ll start producing the tasty Croatian fig next year or the year after.
Also, perhaps too late—but I sowed shiso seeds again. A farmer who grows shiso for syrup contacted me recently to say their crops didn’t do well this year. They even searched for seedlings, but this late in the season, in Germany where shiso isn’t common, it’s difficult to find any. The seedlings I had were sold at the spring market, and I only kept two small ones for home use—not nearly enough. Just as I was about to give up, a gardening friend encouraged me, and I ended up ordering seeds and it arrived in the next day! It may be a sign of good luck. I sowed them in 14 small pots. I hope they germinate well and allow me to make around 50-100 bottles of shiso syrup to share with friends and family.
The “Klein” but Big Garden
Since all the summer vegetables are planted, the main garden tasks now are watering and plant check-ups while weeding. I visit the garden once or twice a week, and a friend who rents the neighboring plot helps with watering if it's dry—so I can rest easy.
The zucchini are loving the heat, and many female flowers are appearing. I’m especially looking forward to harvesting and cooking the yellow variety, which is rare in stores. Since zucchini requires a lot of space, I had given up growing them on the balcony—so I’m really happy to have them again this year.
I harvested the radishes from the raised bed, cleared the weeds, and replanted a struggling cucumber in the open space. I hope it will do better there. Once the seedlings are a bit more mature, I’m planning to plant leeks (porree) between the Brussels sprouts and cavolo nero. Speaking of which... I have no idea where the onions I planted in this bed in spring went 😅
One lovely surprise: I discovered that what I thought was a blackberry was actually a raspberry bush! While blackberries are nice, I can find them everywhere, so I’m especially happy to have found raspberries instead, which I even thought about buying a plant.
Once berry season arrives, I’ll make jam this year.
To-Do for Next Week
Next week is forecasted to be above 30°C most days, so I’ll need to be extra careful about watering. I’d also like to start planning for autumn and winter vegetables. Since my family is away on a trip, maybe I’ll go to the garden early by bike or head out on a berry hunt in forest.
It’s such a joy to spend quiet time on the balcony and in the garden again, and to write a Garden Journal. Next month I’d like to slow down and enjoy some gardening and a good barbecue.

こうしてゆっくりガーデンジャーナルを日曜日に書くのは何週間ぶりでしょう。ゴシックフェス、メイカーレジデンシーであっという間の6月でした。ドイツは夏真っ盛りで、夏の植物たちが元気にしています。バルコニーに出ると、まだちょっと柚子ロスな気分ですが、立ち直りつつあります。

夏の強い日差しのもと、トマトが実をつけています。6月に実がつくのは例年と比べると早くて、うっすら色がつき始めているものもあって、今年は7月にはトマトが食べられそうで楽しみです。バルコニーに植っているのは、子供が楽しめるかなと選んだバルコニートマト5種類です。
Hive Figの一番の古株は、もうすっかり小さな木といった様子で、留守中にこの子が枯れなかったのはよかった 🥺 今大きめの株が4株ほどあって、大事に育てていきたいです。来年、再来年に実がつくといいな。
あと、遅すぎるかもしれませんが、紫蘇の種をまきました。先日紫蘇シロップを栽培している農家から連絡があって、今年はうまく育っていないとのこと。苗も探してくれたとのことですが、紫蘇が一般的ではないドイツでこの時期では見つからず。私が育てていた苗は、春の植物市で売れてしまい、家用に2株だけあるものの、足りない。諦めようかと思っていた矢先に、ガーデニング友達に背中を押されて、種を注文して小さなポット14鉢に種をまきました。無事発芽して、50本くらいシロップを作れるといいな。

夏野菜は植え切ったので、もっぱら庭での仕事は植物の見回りと水やりです。週に1-2回くらい通って、隣の区画を借りている友人も乾いていたら水やりをしてくれるので安心です。
ズッキーニは暑さがうれしいのか、たくさん雌花が出てきました。お店ではそこまで見かけない黄色いズッキーニを収穫して料理するのが楽しみです。ズッキーニを育てるにはかなりスペースが必要で、バルコニーでは諦めていたので、今年は久しぶりにズッキーニを育てられてとてもうれしいです。
レイズドベッドで育てていたラディッシュを収穫して、草を抜いて、元気がなかったきゅうりを空いていた場所に植え替えました。うまく育ってくれるといいな。もう少し苗が育ったら冬用のポリー(西洋ネギ)を芽キャベツや黒ケールの間に植え付けようとおもっています。それにしても春に植えた玉ねぎはどこにいったのだろう・・・😅
ひとつ嬉しい発見があって、ブラックベリーだと思っていたらラズベリーの株が庭にありました。ブラックベリーもよいのですが、ありとあらゆるところに茂っているので、ラズベリーをみつけてうれしいです。
ベリーのシーズンになったら今年はジャムを作ろうと思います。
来週のTODO
来週は30度を超える日が続くとのことで、水切れに気をつけつつ、秋冬野菜の計画を立てようと思っています。家族が旅行で出掛けているので、早朝自転車に乗って庭に行こうか、ベリーハントに行こうかな。
こうしてゆっくりバルコニーや庭で時間を過ごして、ガーデンジャーナルをかけるっていいですね。6月はイベントやレジデンシーでばたばたしてしまい、来月は庭仕事やバーベキューをゆっくり楽しもうと思います。

I found myself googling what shiso was, lol 🤣 This is what I love about this community because I am able to meet different plants that I haven't seen before, and of course, I always find it amazing how your garden plants are doing in this time of the year, so I learned that it's summer time in your area while we are experiencing a balance of rain and sun in my place.
The zucchini seems to love the sunshine; it looks really healthy and happy, and so do the tomatoes. I hope the cucumbers recover. Wishing every plant in your garden to hold on and survive the heat of summer, and wishing you more strength as well for the hard work ahead in watering them.

Yes, same for me I learn a lot from the community. I must have written the botanical name of Shiso "Perilla" along. Just I get used to the Shiso name so much.
I'm not sure it was Hive garden but I learned that growing celery is so easy on Hive and I have one or two plants since then 😊

You're welcome, I enjoyed the visit. Your garden is lovely, although there's a lot more to do - it's normal. It's like a cycle, never-ending. After finishing the first phase of the project, another phase is calling.
