Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - April 26 /
Germany has been getting much warmer recently. I usually write my garden journal on Sundays, but since I’ll be participating in a plant market at the local culture center tomorrow for the first time in a while, I decided to write it today.
Micro Balcony and Indoor Plants
Here in the eastern part of Germany where I live, the temperature has finally stabilized, now reaching over 10°C during the day. Spring is in full swing, and I've been enjoying coffee time out on the balcony.
It has become a daily ritual to sip coffee while observing the plants. I'm so happy to see the spring buds sprouting on my citrus trees — the yuzu and kumquat. The yuzu, which I brought home last November, has been thriving on the balcony all through winter, so it seems well-suited for the German climate.
Speaking of fruit trees, the Hive Fig Family I brought back their mama fruits from Hive Fest has been sprouting like crazy! ☺️ Honestly, I’m starting to wonder what I’ll do if I end up becoming a fig farmer. Once I plant out the summer vegetables that are currently being raised, I’ll have more space on the balcony to carefully repot each fig into individual pots.
Another fruit-related update: my redcurrant has started setting fruit! I had always wondered when its flowers bloomed, and this year I finally spotted its tiny, modest flowers. Watching the fruit form for the first time in my life has been a deeply moving experience (at least for me ... wasn't much for my family ...)
I've started sowing flowers for the garden. I could have direct-sown them, but I decided to raise seedlings instead because otherwise, I would lose track of where I sowed which seeds, and I also want to protect the young plants from slugs, who love tender greens. I sowed sunflower, lupine, strawflower, nasturtium, and marigold seeds. When I first moved to Germany — and even now — I focused mainly on growing edible plants, but over the years, I’ve come to love flowers more and more.
Inside the house, summer vegetable seedlings are growing well. This year, since I finally have access to a garden, I’m looking forward to growing plenty of vegetables that were hard to cultivate on the balcony — like zucchini, pumpkin, corn, and okra.
The "Klein" but Big Garden
Since I traveled to Munich for the Easter holidays this week, I haven’t been able to visit the larger garden since I showed it to my family last Sunday. I’m sure the plants are doing their thing at their own pace. I do worry the weeds might have grown a bit... 😅
It looks like there will be some warm days next week before I leave for Hive Creators Day in Graz, so I’m planning to ride my bike out to the garden for a quick check. Since the garden is planted directly in the ground, I don't have to worry much about watering. Besides, we still have a chance of late frosts until mid-May, so serious planting will have to wait — no pressure for now.
Next Week’s TODOs
Next week, before Hive Creators Day, I’ll check on the large garden once. At home, I’ll transfer the growing summer vegetable seedlings into larger pots. I also printed some stickers for @gardenhive to bring to Hive Creators Day — time to spread the word! ☺️
Just like I discovered delicious figs at Hive Fest 2024, I hope I’ll come across some fascinating plants in Graz too.
That’s it for this week’s garden journal. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. Happy Gardening!
"Klein"
Happy Gardening!
Look forward to seeing you next week
Me too! 😉
Wish I could see you both 😭😭😭
We are excited about the stickers going out. Glad the fig is going strong! You might come back with another plant from the HCD!

If you don't have enough space to grow vegetables at home, growing vegetables on the balcony is a good idea, but it's a bit difficult to cultivate and harvest vegetables from the balcony.
I think it's well worth challenging and fun 😊
So exciting the figs are sprouting!
Yes! I'm so happy and learning how trees grow from seeds by seeing them. I didn't know they pop up so vigorously in spring ...!
