Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 20 April / 大小庭の記録

We had lovely spring-summer weather in Germany until midweek, but it’s been rainy and chilly since then. A farmer I know from a local market and grows shiso posted joyfully on Instagram about the rain. They are right, nature is doing the watering for us 😉 That made me realize I shouldn’t complain about a little cold weather.

Micro Balcony and Indoor Plants

It's still too cold outside, so I’m keeping the summer vegetable seedlings indoors for now. The zucchinis alread looks enormous—even they are babies—and it seems they are eager to go outside. Maybe it would have been better to wait until late April 💦 Let's see!

Inside the house, shiso (perilla) is going full speed ahead for the local plant market next weekend. My daughter wants to earn money to buy a Nintendo Switch, so I’m helping out. I wish the seedlings were a bit bigger, but nature takes its own pace. We’ll leave it to the shiso. When the temperature rises next week, I move them outside to start hardening them off.

Even though I’ve learned my lesson with zucchini, I couldn’t resist sowing more cucurbit seeds this week—pumpkin and bitter melon. It feels so rewarding to have a garden where I can grow space-hungry plants like zucchini and pumpkin.

Since it’s still cold on some days, I sowed herbs and flowers that grow slowly and can be left on the balcony in my hand made plastic greenhouse—along with extra trays of shiso that won’t fit inside the house 😅

By the way, have you ever seen the flowers of currants? I’ve seen the berries but never noticed the flowers before. I was curious about when and how they bloom, and it turns out they’re quite modest and easy to miss. Several flower clusters have formed, so I’m hoping for more harvest than last year—can’t wait!

The "Klein" But Big Garden

Since my new garden is fully outdoors, I’ve only planted things that can handle the cold—broad beans, onion sets, and some hardy herb seedlings. But I’ve been slowly getting ready for summer: fixing a chair with a broken seat, removing the lock from the gate (which has no key), and other small projects.

I visit the garden once or twice a week and time by time building up a compost pile. It’s shaping up nicely. I’d like to fill it by the end of spring, let it rest through late autumn, and then use it to cover the soil.

Oh yes—my first attempt at cooking rice in the garden was a success! I wrote a separate post about it, so feel free to check it out. This season, I want to explore more outdoor cooking while working in the garden, something I’ve long dreamed of.

Next Week's Garden To-Do

We’re going on a short family trip, so I probably won’t be able to do much in the gardens. But in Munich, there’s a Manufactum store where I’m excited to check out gardening tools. On Sunday, our local plant market takes place. I hope many people will stop by and pick up shiso seeds, seedlings, or syrup.

That wraps up the week. Despite the chilly days, I can feel spring settling in. I’m looking forward to the full gardening season, enjoying both the daily tasks and the harvests to come.

ドイツでは週の半ばまでいい天気と春夏の気温が続いていましたが、週の後半に入って雨が降って気温が下がっています。紫蘇シロップに使う紫蘇の栽培でお世話になっている農家がインスタグラムで雨を喜ぶ投稿をしていて、自然が水やりをしてくれているんだし、ちょっと寒いくらいで文句言っちゃいけないなと思うのでした。恵の雨ということにしましょう ☔️

まだ屋外は寒いので、夏野菜の苗は家の中で育てています。ズッキーニは双葉の時点ですでに巨大で外に出たがっているような・・・。庭を手に入れて久しぶりにまいたのでうれしさのあまり種まきの感覚が狂っていたのか、もしかすると4月末にまくのでもよかったかもしれません 💦

家の中では来週末の地元の植物マーケットに向けて、紫蘇がラストスパート中です。子供が任天堂Switchを買うお金を稼ぎたいとのことで私もお手伝い。もうちょっと大きくなってほしいですが、これもまた自然。紫蘇たちに委ねましょう。来週気温が上がったら外に出して外気にならす予定です。

ズッキーニで懲りているのに瓜類の種まきを続けています。今週はかぼちゃと苦瓜の種をまきました。庭を借りて、ズッキーニやかぼちゃなど、スペースが必要な植物を育てられる喜びを感じています。

まだ寒い日があるので、バルコニーのなんちゃってビニールハウスでは家に入りきらないセルトレイの紫蘇に加えて、ゆっくり育ってくれればOKなハーブと花の種をまいて置いておきました。

そうそう、みなさん、カラントの花って見たことありますか？私は実を見かけても花を見たことがなかったので、いつどんな花が咲いているのだろうと不思議に思っていたら、こんな控えめな花だったのですね。見過ごすはずです。花の房がいくつかついていたので、今年は去年よりもたくさん収穫できそうで楽しみです。

"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子

大きい庭は完全に屋外なこともあって、そら豆と玉ねぎの球根、耐寒性のあるハーブの苗を植えたくらいです。でも着々と夏に向けた準備も進めていて、座面の一部が折れていた椅子を修理したり、鍵のない門のロックを外す作業を進めたり。

週に1、2度通ってコンポストを積んでいます。良い感じに積み上がってきて、春の終わりにはいっぱいにして、晩秋まで寝かせて、お礼肥のように土の上にかぶせられたらいいな。

来週のTODO

家族での小旅行があるので、あまり庭作業はできなさそうですが、旅行先のミュンヘンにはManufactumがあり、ガーデニング用品を見に行くのが楽しみです。日曜日には地元の植物マーケットがあり、紫蘇の種、苗、シロップをたくさんの人に手に取ってもらえたらいいなと思っています。

そんなこんなの一週間でした。寒い日もありますが、春の訪れを感じる日々。ガーデニングシーズン本番に向けて日々の作業や収穫を楽しみたいです。
