Micro and Klein Garden Journal 2025 - 18 May / 大小庭の記録

In Germany, the mornings and evenings are still quite chilly, so it doesn’t really feel like early summer yet—but spring is definitely here. This week, I loaded the car with summer vegetable seedlings and went to the garden with my daughter to plant them. Some plants were also relocated from the balcony to the garden, which has made the balcony feel a bit more spacious. I’d like to tidy it up a bit more so I can enjoy coffee or wine during the gardening season out there.

Micro Balcony Update

It seems the ISO setting on my camera was strange, so pictures turned out with a retro feel. The balcony is where I grow seedlings, herbs for everyday use, and potted trees that come indoors in winter. I've started to create more space, though it's still quite full 😅

The Hive fig trees, grown from seeds brought back from Hive Fest, are now starting to be a real baby tree. Here’s the most fast growing one:

While I was attending Hive Creators Day, the soil dried out more than expected and I lost some of the newly sprouted seedlings. I now have 8 left, but I still have more seeds, so I’m staying optimistic. I’m excited to see how much they grow during spring and summer.

Speaking of fruit trees, the yuzu I bought last year has three flower buds and is sprouting vigorously this spring. I’m already looking forward to a possible harvest. Aphids love the young shoots, so today I carefully removed them with tape... no photo for it of course 😉

Both my daughter and I love tomatoes, so we plant plenty every year. This time, I planted low-growing balcony tomatoes on the balcony and taller varieties in the garden. They’re mulched with straw.

I learned about straw mulch from a gardener I love on YouTube, and it's been surprisingly effective at retaining moisture in the soil. It also composts easily later. I use pet straw bedding—it’s very affordable. Highly recommended!

Now that most of the summer seedlings are in, I’m already preparing for fall and winter. I sowed seeds for Nine Star Perennial Broccoli, which produces cauliflower-like florets, and sprouting broccoletto.

The “Klein” but Big Garden

This week, I visited the garden on Tuesday and Saturday. On Tuesday, I rode my bike to the market to pick up seedlings and did some garden work—this routine is one of my favorites in this season.

On the other day, I drove with my daughter to plant the summer vegetable seedlings and companion plants we had started at home, as well as some herbs.

This year, I’m trying to grow bitter melon (goya) in the garden. Although our balcony gets good morning sun, it faces east and gets shaded in the afternoon. The garden is partially shaded by trees, but the gentle dappled sunlight throughout the day might work well. At the end of the season, I’d like to properly prune the trees.

The tomato plants I bought at the local plant market last month are thriving in the garden. I’m growing Money Maker and Black Beauty—both are well-known varieties that often appear in gardening videos on YouTube. I’m looking forward to watching them grow.

Now that most of the planting is done, next week I plan to do some quiet weeding and maybe enjoy a bit of outdoor cooking in the garden.

Next Week’s To-Do

With the spring and summer planting mostly complete, I feel a mix of relief and a touch of melancholy. While tending to the plants we’ve already put in, I want to focus on tidying the balcony and mowing the garden paths—transforming both into even more comfortable spaces.

Oh, and I still want to get some paprika seedlings, and maybe add some Italian parsley to the herb corner… I need to be careful not to overplant 😁

ドイツでは朝晩はまだまだ肌寒く、初夏とは言えませんが、春にはなってきた感じで、今週は車で庭に夏野菜の苗を運んで子供と植え付けをしました。バルコニーから庭に移動した植物もいくつかあり、バルコニーがすっきりしてきました。もうちょっと整理して、ガーデニングシーズンにもコーヒーやワインを楽しみたいです。

カメラのISOの設定がおかしかったようで、レトロ写真のようになってしまいましたが、バルコニーでは育苗や日々使う野菜の栽培、冬に取り込む木の栽培場所にして、スペースができました。まだまだ多いですが 😅

Hive Festから持ち帰ってきたイチヂクの種から育てているHiveイチヂクは、木の赤ちゃんのようになってきました。一番の成長株はこんな感じ。

Hive Creators Dayに参加している間、思いの外土が乾いてしまい、発芽したての芽を枯らせてしまって現在8株。まだまだ種もあるのでよしとしましょう。春夏にどのくらい大きくなるのか楽しみです。

果樹といえば、去年我が家にやってきた柚子に3つ蕾がついて、木も元気に春芽を出しているので、今年も収穫できるかなと今から期待しています。若い芽にアブラムシがつくので今日は気合を入れてテープで撮りました・・・写真は自粛します😉

私も子供もトマトが大好きで、毎年たくさん植えていて、今年はバルコニーに背が低めのバルコニートマトを植えて、庭に大きくなるトマトを植えました。藁マルチでをしてバッチリです。

藁マルチは大好きなガーデナーさんのYouTubeで知って、これだけでも驚くほど土の乾燥を防いでくれて、そのまま土に返すなりコンポストするなりできます。うちではペットの敷き藁を使っていて、お値段はものすごくお手頃。ということで、藁マルチおすすめです！

夏野菜の育苗や植え付けがおおかた終わって、「ああ、時間が経つのは早いなあ」と思いつつ、早くも秋冬苗の準備をしています。ナインスターブロッコリーというカリフラワーのような花房のつくアブラナ科の多年草と、茎ブロッコリーの種をまきました。

"Klein"だけれど大きい庭の様子

今週は火曜日と土曜日に庭に行ってきました。火曜日は自転車に乗って、マーケットで苗を買って、庭仕事・・・この流れ、大好きなんですよね。

もう一日は子供と一緒に車に乗って、家で育苗していた夏野菜やコンパニオンプランツ、ハーブの苗を植えてきました。

ゴーヤは今年は庭で栽培してみることにしました。バルコニーは朝の日当たりはよいものの、東向きなので、午後は日陰なんですよね。庭には木があるので若干日陰気味なものの、一日を通して木漏れ日が当たるのはよさそうです。シーズンの終わりに木の枝をきちんと整理したいです。

先月末に地元の植物市で買ったトマトは庭でワイルドに育っています。マニーメイカー、ブラックビューティーというどちらもとても有名な品種で、YouTubeの動画などでもたびたび耳にすることがあり、成長が楽しみです。

おおかた植え付けが終わったので、来週は地味な草刈りと庭クッキングをしに行こうと思っています。

来週のTODO

春夏の作業がひと段落して、ほっと一息つくやら、ちょっと寂しいやらです。植え付けた植物の世話をしつつ、バルコニーでは片付けを、庭では草刈をして、居心地の良いスペースにするための作業に時間を使いたいなと思っています。

ああ、あと、パプリカの苗を買って植えたしたいな、ハーブを植えている一角にイタリアンパセリがあってもいいな・・・なんて。ついつい植えすぎてしまうので植えすぎ注意 😁
