Garden Journal 2026.03.01 /

It’s almost spring! This week I finally went back to the garden for the first time in four months. Interestingly, a tree that I had secretly felt was a bit in the way (sorry, tree…) had been removed by the garden club because it was classified as an invasive and toxic species. It was quite a large tree, and I can’t help but wonder how the previous owner came to plant it in the first place, and why the garden club hadn’t noticed it earlier. In any case, I’m happy to have gained more space for cultivation ☺️
Looking back at last year’s photo, you can see that the tree to the right of the shed is now gone.

It’s funny how, as soon as the weather gets warmer, my gardening motivation returns every year. I’ve already done my first sowing of the year: broad beans and bonsai chili, my February routine. Also, for the past two years, the farmer who grows shiso (Perilla) for my shiso syrup has been having problems with poor germination and weak growth. So this year, I’ve sown shiso seeds myself and am planning to raise some of the seedlings on my own. The shiso has already started to sprout — I’m taking it as a promising start!
On the balcony, the bulbs have begun to push up their shoots, and I’ve started stepping outside more often to check on them — and to enjoy coffee out there again ☺️ It’s a little moment of bliss.

Even the home improvement stores are getting into the spring–summer gardening mode, and whenever I visit, I feel like I might buy too much 💦

The list of plants I want to grow never ends, but this year I’m determined to focus and choose carefully… although I seem to say that every year.
I have two business trips next week, so I probably won’t be able to do much gardening next week. But the week after, I’d like to start more actively tending both the balcony and the garden — for example, moving the balcony berries into the garden.
Happy Gardening and have a nice start of the gardening season 🌱

Happy Gardening!
Woohoo, Spring! That means the Hive garden community is going to get busier too. Good news on the tree - more growing space! Jamie's just cut a cedar gum that was growing back up again after being chopped. It's pretty big so I dont' think he can dig it out but he scored big lines in the trunk with a chainsaw and I've covered it with wet straw so it should rot down, and I hope that the rotting roots just help the soil too. We can both love and hate trees sometimes!
Wow brave & wild 👏 I must maintain other tall trees in the garden but luckily my friend family will help me. I look forward to learning how to maintain trees ☺️
And yes, more post on Hive Garden!
