Monochrome Majesty: A Peacock in Black & White

Monochrome Majesty: A Peacock in Black & White

On our honeymoon in 2023, we spent a couple of nights at a small BNB on a beautiful farm-like property, where bokkies, ostriches, and peacocks roamed freely. One evening, as we sat on our balcony enjoying the sunset and the view of the animals, I decided to put my zoom lens to the test and capture a peacock in action.

This particular peacock, however, had zero interest in posing for me. It was constantly on the move, making it incredibly tricky to hold my long, heavy zoom lens steady enough to get a sharp shot. I think every photo ended up slightly out of focus—proof of just how energetic this elegant bird was! I even attempted a still shot with a blurred background (a skill I have yet to master), but let’s just say… it didn’t go as planned.

When I think of peacocks, I immediately picture their bright, vibrant colors. So, naturally, I decided to edit these photos in full black and white—completely stripping away what they’re best known for. Somehow, though, I love them this way. The contrast makes them feel unique, and despite their imperfections, these photos capture a fun experience of testing my skills with a lens I’m clearly still getting the hang of.

Sometimes though, photography isn’t about perfection — it’s all about the moment, the movement, and the memory. And blurry or not, this was one memory I won’t forget.
