Cycle Tour 2020

Cycle Tour 2020

Back in the beginning of March 2020, my older brother conquered the Cape Cycle tour. This Tour is around 109km of cycling all over the beautiful landscapes of the Western Cape. I had the honour of being there to support and watch him which was super exciting.

When we went off to get his race pack at the stadium, I started the day with a coffee coke... I am not the biggest coke drinker but I am a huge coffee lover, this definitely had a kick...

This was the first time that I had been in the stadium in Cape Town, it is absolutely massive!

The night before the race we treated our cyclist to the greatest pasta in Sea Point (In my opinion, seriously go try Bella Italia)

My biggest excitement for watching this race was getting the opportunity to try test out my new found knowledge of photographing movement. I had done a photography course a few years prior and we learnt about the technique where you get a photograph of a moving object but the moving object is focused on and still in the photo and the background is blurred. I find this quite an awesome technique and if you do it right you can get some awesome photographs.

This was however my first time really putting the technique to practice and trying it out, and honestly... not as easy as you would think. I got a lot of photographs like the one below where everything was just a blur...

But I kept at it and kept photographing as many cyclists as I could, trying to capture an epic movement photograph.

I played with my settings and tried different things.

...And eventually, I got the photo below... not 100% what I really wanted but in my opinion it was one of the nicest photos I snapped that day, where the subject is mostly in focus and the background is blurred.

Anyway... I am excited to attempt this again soon and see how I have improved in the past few years. I do believe that photography is also an art form however and sometimes it is just great to have some fun with it and test out new styles, even if they don't quite work out.

Testing capturing frames with movement not the easiest, appears to have been a wonderful day out.
