The Recoleta Cemetery - The resting place of Argentine History
𝔗𝔥𝔢 ℜ𝔢𝔠𝔬𝔩𝔢𝔱𝔞 ℭ𝔢𝔪𝔢𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔶
Built in 1822 by the French architect Prospero Catelin, the Recoleta Cemetery (located in the neighborhood of the same name), is the most visited tourist spot of the place due not only to its mausoleums and vaults of the nineteenth century that are an architectural marvel, but also because this cemetery is the resting place of important figures in the history of Argentina.
Formerly, the upper class families paid generous amounts of money to build the most imposing mausoleum, that is why this place exists. We can observe not only the vaults but also some coffins are uncovered revealing their luxury and also, sculpture created in great detail.
In this public cemetery there are outstanding personalities such as : Eva De Peron, Former President Roca, Sarmiento, Aramburu, the former governor of Buenos Aires Juan Manuel de Rosas, Rufina Cambaceres, The first president of the Argentine history Bernardino Rivadavia, Bartolome Mitre, Leloir , Juan Lavalle and many more since the cemetery has 4780 Bovedas spread over more than 54000 square meters. As you can see, the site is huge and it would take a whole post to name them all.
In the photo on the left, is the mausoleum of Domigno Faustino Sarmiento, former president of Argentina and a teacher by profession. Recognized for always promoting education in the country.
When I went to school there was a very popular saying (which is still in force) that said: If you never miss school you are a Sarmiento. I was called Sarmiento because of my commitment at school always referring to this procer, one of the most important figures of Argentina.
Admission is free for Argentine residents. We had more than 3 hours of trip but it was worth it to know this monument declared historical patrimony.
The atmosphere of the place was peaceful but at the same time melancholy. Some of the vaults were in bad condition so you could see the coffins and other things. A spectacular architectural experience, enriching and why not, terrifying.
The tomb of Rufina was the one I knew the most, since her story is truly terrifying. It turns out that she was apparently buried alive. She was presumed dead but in reality, she suffered from Catalepsy and we already know that having this condition in the 19th century was a possibility. I can't imagine all the suffering this woman must have gone through at the age of 19.
Also, there is the sculpture of a woman who was buried next to her dog who is said to have died on her wedding night.
I hope you liked my post. I would have liked to put more pictures but the place was huge. At one point I got lost because it looked like a labyrinth and I didn't get to go through it all. Undoubtedly, a place you have to visit if you come to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In this place I got to thinking: They will live forever but we mere mortals will die eternally.
Greetings!

I remember when I was near the place, I could only see it from the outside. And inside it's a marvellous, a great walk and a great tourist place. I love it, you know I love cemeteries, they have that special thing, that we admire... the witches hahaha.
Thank you Ivana!❤️
We have to made an aquelarre in that place ...ar the night o.o hahahaha thank you
That must be spell in another language, yeah let's do that hahaha.
a place that must be scary at night because of its figures, as for the infrastructure, it has too many details as if expressing something for those who want it or take the trouble to look for its meaning.
¡Esto está genial! Las fotos se ven increíbles, excelente composición en todas, el lugar imponente y se puede observar que es gigante, habría que recorrerlo varias veces, da para una parte dos. Saludos, linda. @aibi93 😘
