What hits home the most is that I think I've seen markets like that before, not just in the way they are but also in that mostly empty state...it feels really eerie to imagine a crowded place like that be a ghost town.

Yeah it's a depressing environment, more so during the peak of winter where such a large, open space only feels more cold. I know I'll start doing my bit and purchasing what I can from there instead of the store just across the road.
