Wilderness Journal 24 - A growing Forest

One lone tree stands in a vast field, but envision a future where many flourish. It might take a year, a decade, or even a century, yet one day, this field will birth a thriving, ancient forest—a tapestry of life and diversity! Picture deer grazing among the grasses and delicate plants, creating a living mosaic upon the forest floor. Squirrels will navigate the intricate pathways of branches, engaged in their perpetual quest for the perfect pine cone, fiercely defending their territories. Bears will undoubtedly join the feast, relishing Saskatoon berries and the smaller inhabitants of these woods.

And the birds—how could we overlook them? Hundreds of species will grace this haven during migration periods, while others will choose this sanctuary as their permanent residence! Even now, this budding forest teems with life. The more we allow it to flourish undisturbed, the richer it will become, embracing cycles of growth and renewal. This forest will self-regulate; it won't be flawless—challenges and setbacks will arise, but ultimately, it will persevere, nurturing life within its realm.

We, as humans, often boast of our prowess in managing environments. True, Western science has advanced our understanding of ecosystem management. Yet, at times, our interference can disrupt the delicate balance—over-culling in certain areas or suppressing natural forest fires, hindering the rejuvenating force that springs from the earth.
