Hello Cicada! || ¡Hola Chicharra!

Have you seen a cicada? I'll introduce you to it. I could barely make it out on that wall and was able to take some pictures of it. You may have heard them, as it is one of the most decibel sounds in nature. But a smaller group has had it in their hands. I am among that group.

My earliest memories of these little animals date back to my school years. We lived in a rural area where they were abundant at a certain time of the year. It was normal to find them on the ground, on the road, either dead or alive. I was not born in that area, but my classmates were, and they were used to it. What did they do?

Well, some of them hung them on their shirts. Alive! Crazy that they were holding on to those naughty kids. Anyway... The point is, they would pin it to their chest and approach girls or other children who found the animal distasteful. It was hilarious to watch them run or freak out.

Others had the finesse to tie a string to the small body of the live cicada. Then they would send it flying while holding the other end of the string, which was a meter or more long. Then the cicada would fly only in circles. Then they had fun watching it and encouraging it to keep flying. What children used to do when there were no social networks, right?

And you couldn't forget to put it in the hair of the poor girls, or put it inside the flannel of another child. In this case you were already risking the punishment of the school authorities or a good slapping.

I have a lot to say about them, such as their peculiar life, sound emitted and the "dew" they seem to throw when they are gathered in one place, but I will leave that for a future occasion. Finding this cicada in the vicinity of where I live made me admire its shape, and evoked these memories of my childhood. I think it has its advantages to have lived those years in an area like that, where we can enjoy a natural environment and surrounded by an amazing nature that can also serve as teachers.

¿Has visto una chicharra? Te la presento. Apenas pude distinguirla en esa pared y pudo tomarle unas fotos. Tal vez las hayas escuchado, ya que es uno de los sonidos en la naturaleza que tienen más decibeles. Pero un grupo más reducido la han tenido en sus manos. Yo estoy dentro de ese grupo.

Mis primeros recuerdos de éstos animalitos se ubican en mis años de escuela. Vivíamos en una zona rural donde abundan en cierta temporada del año. Era normal encontrarlas en el suelo, en la carretera, bien sea vivas o muertas. Yo no había nacido en esa zona, pero mis compañeros sí, y estaban acostumbrados. ¿Qué hacían?

Bueno, algunos se la guindaban en la camisa. ¡Vivas! Qué loco que ellas se sujetaran de esos niños traviesos. Anyway... El punto es que se la colocaban como un prendedor en el pecho y se acercaban a niñas u otros niños a los que les resultaba desagradable el animal. Era muy gracioso verlos correr o espantarse.

Otros tenían la delicadeza de amarrarle un hilo al pequeño cuerpo de la chicharra viva. Entonces la echaban a volar mientras sujetaban el otro extremo del hilo de un metro o más de largo. Entonces la chicharra volaba sólo en círculos. Entonces se divertían viéndola y animándola a que siguiera volando. Lo que hacían los niños cuando no existían redes sociales, ¿no?

Y no podía faltar el colocárselo en los cabellos de las pobres niñas, o introducirlo dentro de la franela de otro niño. En éste caso ya te jugabas con el castigo de las autoridades del plantel o de una buena cachetada.

Tengo mucho que decir sobre ellas, como su peculiar vida, sonido emitido y el "rocío" que parecen arrojar cuando están reunidas en un sitio, pero eso lo dejaré para una próxima ocasión. Al encontrar ésta chicharra en las cercanías del lugar donde vivo me hizo admirar su forma, y evocó éstos recuerdos de mi niñez. Creo que tiene sus ventajas haber vivido esos años en una zona como esa, donde podemos disfrutar de un ambiente natural y rodeado de una asombrosa naturaleza que también pueden servir como maestros.
